Basically, if the child is able to read but during assessment he fare very badly due to nervous, it might result he will need to go through certain stage.

Maybe you can take him for assessment and decide.

I’ve sent my child to both ICR and LC and terminated half-way due to the programme and teachers’ issue. If your child already can read with some guidance, I guess consistent reading is the best way to improve their reading skills. Although my DD knows the basic blending, when comes to some words, she can’t pronounce using phonics, let alone long words. Important thing is to let your child pick up the good habit of reading.

For LC, she was enrolled to the Lift Off course in July this year but due to the long 33 weeks, it’ll roll over to next year April 2011, which I think will be too late as I feel she needed P1 prep more than just pure reading. Lift Off covers mostly blending, spelling and comprehension but none on composition which I think is important too. And worst of all, when the teacher is on sick leave, there is no make-up on the following week and the course just get extended by another week. I feel it’s not fair to the child.

              Just my 2 cents worth.

                thanks gaagaa

i had the same reservation as u, which is why i didnt sign up for ICR after the assessment last mth, cos they wanted him to go for ICR prelim whc is still phonics. i wanted more no p1 prep course n exploring whr LCentral will be diff if he can be allowed to join the PSS course after assessment tmr. my boy already k1, next yr k2. seems a bit late like that.

                  Hi 24hr-mum,

How’s the assessment? I believe LC will ask you to enrol ur child in the 33 weeks LiftOff course rather than the P1 prep course since there is still 1 more year before P1. I don’t think it’s too late (as compared to my situation) and even if you were to enrol into LiftOff programme, your child will still be promoted to the P1 prep programme after 33 weeks before he enters P1.

                    hi gaagaa

i m so surprised that the teacher say my boy can join PFS(prepare for sch). 2 mths ago, i did assessment at ICR, was asked to join ICR prelim class to learn the phonics!

the PFS is the usual grammar, vocab, compo, oral, compre class. not phonics class.

i m pleased wif the assessment n prob will sign up.

                      Hi 24hr-mum

I’m just like you, were surprised that my boy can join PFS class. Before hand, I was hoping he could go to liftoff as I would like him to hv a good base on phonics, I tink it is important. But since they hv graded him at PFS, I’ll just let him try. He will start his class in Jan 2011.

I’ll let u know how his progress.

                      Thanks
                      gsk

                        Hi 24-hr mum,

I feel soooo happy for you. Good then, at least that's what you want for your child unlike my situation. My girl keep complaining too easy in the LiftOff class for her and every lesson, she has to wait for the other 2 children who are much slower in reading. The teacher also does not give any feedback to me after every lesson but only talk to the slower child's parent. I just feel the Lift Off programme is not suitable for her and guess it's just my luck. But anyway, I'm glad this Friday is her last lesson in LC and I'm praying hard that the next school she's going would be much much better 🙏
