anyway, i think the school will be in good hands as ytss has made significant improvements in recent years (just like nchs). the difference between nchs and ytss would be that ytss attained autonomous status while nchs is awarded SAP status due to its chinese roots. imho, the school's COP and academic results should go up proportionately in the coming years.

Any parents of NCHS would like to share about their childrens’ school life? I selected this school as 1st choice for my DS with a PSLE score of 241 mainly because of the school’s ever improving grades and designated as SAP from Jan 2012. I believe that my DS can benefit from the school’s strong Chinese culture and good character building programme that is in place.

Yes, this thread seems to be too quiet. Now, NCHS is offering http://www.nanchiauhigh.moe.edu.sg/cos/o.x?c=/wbn/pagetree&func=view&rid=1081275 sponsored by SHHK to high flying P6 students admitted in 2011. Encouraging news indeed.
            😉

My friend's DD is in NCHS. She like the school cos teacher very caring and responsible. The teacher is willing to help if you have problems.

This is the reason I put NCHS as 1st choice eventhough my DS only score 230. Short of 1 point. Hope they will accept my appeal. 🙏 🙏

                    Hi Sweet Cherry

Great to know that your DS is in NCHS and in Sec 2 next year.
Would like to know the following:
                    1) are the teachers always pushing the students to the limits like giving lots of homework, projects…etc?
                    2) Discipline and character building
                    3) Chinese standard very high? so call a school with Chinese roots
                    3) shortest journey to school from hougang ave 1. Have service 87, ends at the interchange. Need to walk about 10 mins to reach school. What other alternative service available? Someone told me to change bus at hougang central and take 161 and another one told me to alight just before the interchange and cross over to take 372.

                      Hi On the ball,

I shall answer yr queries based on my personal knowledge & opinions :

(1). Based on their sch's standard and their journey to become a Band 1 sch, we can't deny the efforts that everyone, i.e. teachers & students, have put in to achieve this. It's definitely 'no pain, no gain' in order to have good results. esp. if the majority of the students who were admitted to Sec 1 were based on the PSLE T-score of 230+ range, which is ordinary results, but came out extraordinary 'O' Level results. They are able to achieve the average of 11 pts (Band 1) for their 'O' Level. Hence, it's no miracles for them to do this without much pushing and hardwork.

Pls bear in mind that homework in secondary will definitely be much more compared to primary, when we are comparing 4 vs 8 subjects. And also, there is no projects compared to primary level. So far, my DS is able to manage without complaints.

(2). The school has in the past years achieved the Character Development Award and they have a HOD for Character Development & Welfare, hence, character development is one area which the sch did not miss out.

Yes, the sch has very strict discipline in terms of students' behaviour and appearance, i.e. uniform & hair.

(3). Standard of Chinese depends on the capability of the child. Students may choose either to take Normal Chinese or Higher Chinese based on their preference, there is no 'forcing'. Personally, I am very grateful to the school to let my son try out Higher Chinese when he was being admitted to the sch this yr though he did not study Higher Chinese when he was in pri sch.

(4). Sorry, I do not know exactly where is Hougang Ave 1, though I'm staying in Hougang Ave 8 which my son takes Bus No. 161 & alights in front of Blk 301D, Sengkang East Road, then walk abt 200m to sch. I hope the above helps. Do feel free to let me know if you wants to know more, will be glad of any help 🙂

                      Cheers

                        Hi Sweet Cherry

Thank you for your very detailed answers. Will get more info from you if my DS is successful in his application…

The Suday Times article(5/12) on the school was timely. Before submitting the selection, I spoke to many more experienced parents and seek their views as I was contemplationg choosing XMS as first choice as well since his marks qualifies. Finally, decided on NCHS as I felt the school could achieve evenmore in the years to come and I want my DS to know more of the Chinese roots and culture.

                        Cheers!
