Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

Son's present tutor pissed me off. Looking for another tutor to last him till end of P6. Tried very hard to speak to them in Chinese, either they replied me in English or else ignored me.okay, so we are in NCL boat. Mine not doing any chinese tuition in P4. How about yours ? Any effective tutors ? I really don't want to wait till end of P5 and be in super-panic mode.
This holiday, I tried to get mine to memorize some chinese compo. It is tough but hopefully will be of some help.
Any advise from 2010 P5/P6 moms ? What else can we do ? :stupid:
We also don't speak Chinese at home and the oral topics can be so wide range.
If you need to get a tutor, do so asap or else tutors will charge sky high prices if you only get one at P6. -
i intend to get an ex-teacher to coach my son, 1-1, but i'm sure it's going to be expensive.

If he/she has agreed to teach, then have a discussion that he/she can do so for P5 and P6. If possible, fix the amount so that there is no regret or backing out at the last min. -
Our Chinese syllabus/exam formats keeps changing so it make sense to get ex-teachers. Some of my friends use tutors from ROC, they are good in the language but some are not to in-tuned with our exam situation.
Ex-teacher 1-to-1, if effective, no choice but to try, I guess.
Some of my friends have 1-to-1 plus group tution meaning the kid takes 2 chinese tution per week.
I am worried ds will get burnt out if I take this route.
From earlier experience, just the 2hrs per week with the tutor can't do magic too, got to put in some work ourselves but with the daily grind and other subjects, just so difficult to keep up with the increasing requirement every year.
janet_lee88, mine also pulled down due to CA1 and SA1 :stupid: so I hope he learnt the lesson and try to be consistent.

No lah, you're not grumbling. We have our frustrations. Local CL teachers hardly give tuition. I dare not give him twice a week bcos I have problems juggling his time-table as it is...he will be very burnt and frustrated too. But of course, 1 1/2 hours a week is insufficient either...what to do ? Son was pulled down at CA1 and SA1 in P3 and P4...not adjusted to tougher workload I guess. By the time he's adjusted, it's the end of the school year but damage has been done and no matter how much better he did for SA2, it's not enough to pull up overall. -
hey, did any of you bring your kids to sec school open house? is it too kiasu to bring our P5 kids there now? :oops:

Bringing my son to have a feel of sec school now is not effective...maybe at the end of P5 would be more effective hopefully. I'm nagging at him to read the ST, story books (both Eng & Chinese). -
It’s a tough calling to ask my DD to read The Straits Times. How to interest her? I think by reading ST will improving not only General Knowledge/ current affairs, also vocabulary. She is selective when choosing story books too. Aiyah, headache…

It's tough enough getting him to pick up a book to read...so tired of nagging but how else to improve his English and Chinese ???
Got so mad with him last night...gave him few pages of vocab to do...told me he doesn't understand the words. Asked him what is the dictionary for ? :x -
KoalaMummy, just go if you want, heck care if others call it too ks. I think for those planning for DSA, should be about time. I haven't yet, keep thinking probably he will go to one nearby (pray hard t-score is ok), if really turns out well then we will take it from there. Mine also no impact if see the school but I tried prep talk about the t-score through the school holidays and seems to have absorbed a little.
ST - What I did was flip through for interesting articles more related to local news and kid's life, then cut out for him to read. My ds is okay with reading EL but the 'advantages' not coming out in the compo :stupid: He also lazy to check dictionary and for those he came across before and did check - forgets !
