I feel that the 1st answer is definitely the proper statement, and the 2nd is not really acceptable.

If we have a question: \"Who did not play well in the match?\", the 1st version will provide the correct answer, which is: Steve, while also providing the reason why he did not do well in the match.

The 2nd version is ambiguous. While it says that Steve is anxious, it doesn't explicitly imply that it was Steve that did not do well in the match.

It doesnt matter if the 2nd answer is acceptable or not. Fact is, the first answer is better and one should learn from it.

                      Hi
I gave this question to my son last night and his answer was -----

Much to Mrs Ong's annoyance, her son has broken another antique vase.

But, he couldn’t offer much explanation about his choice.
I think we should use the Present Perfect Tense in this question because it is about an action which happened in the past, but still have an effect in the present.

                      Hope I am right.

The 2nd version is crystal clear. \"He\" refers to Steve and not anyone else.
