French or German? Which language is more useful?

Or Malay? Easier to pass as a 3rd language!

Malay is popular with Aussie Agriculture experts who work in Indonesia. Is that what you want.....? -

Hi would like to have opinions of ksparents of which language is more useful French or German..
thanks
Neither. For meaningful business transactions, even the French and Germans speak competent English. From an utility point of view, not much to be gained at all.
If you have interest, take for fun lah! -

Thinking more of practicality. To pass as 3rd language + since we are surrounded by so many Malay speaking countries - good to know the language.vicki:

+ when you get a maid in the future (if indonesian) can communicate with her easier! -

It could conceivably be France, Germany or Japan, I suppose, where there are strong scientific institutes.3Boys:

That is not to say that there is no value in taking a third language, which is why I say to take for fun. There is plenty to be gained in reading texts from a different culture other than English, so Latin isn't actually so far fetched! -

totaly agree with you on this .French more useful for humanities; German more useful for sciences.
German is easier to read; French is easier to speak ā or so people tell me. -
My son was given French and we ultimately chose Malay Special Program under his school.
We lived in South East Asia. Our immediate neighbour to the north of about 27 million people speaks malay. Our neighbour Indonesia comprising of 230 million speaks malay too. In singapore, we have about 10% of malay.
for practical purpose, we chose malay.
The school also provides annual trip to the region to understand the culture our SEA. -

hi. planning to shift my daughter in p3 to take up french, in lieu of MT. anybody has good recommendations on tuition centre? we are residing in choa chu kang area.
my niece got a full scholarship from a French uni, including an \"escort\" coming all the way here to fetch her to France for the first yearkiasuest2:
I know of students who took German and did so well that they obtained scholarships to do undergraduate studies in German Unis, that is, the medium of instruction is in GERMAN.
I am not aware if there are scholars studying in French Unis though.
thanks so much

I would take up french probably as more widely spoken than german, non? Plus getting by outside Paris can be frustrating if you speak only English, whreas in Germany it didn't pose any problem for me. Plus it will be useful if you ever go to northern part of africa if you can't speak arabic.
I am just bias as i love the language.... -
I would take french, a good friend of mine did that and when she talks to her french business associates, they are very impressed. For german, the germans can mostly speak english so you do not have to learn german.
This is just my opinion based on one friend's experience. Anyways, I love the sound of french as well, sounds very 'high-class'
