Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools
-
Hi,
I have spent the last week combing through all the entries & realize how late I am & so totally so unprepared..
I would appreciate if parents can share & give me some advice, this is my current shortlist of schools for my gals that are born 2007 & 2008 :
Affliated Schools
Nanyang Primary - within 1km
CHIJ Primary Toa Payoh - within 1km
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian - 1km - 2km
Paya Lebar MGS Primary - 1km - 2km
CHIJ St Nicholas - >2km*
Non Affliated School
Rosyth - within 1km
Pei Chun - 1km - 2km
Aitong - >2km (Hokkein Huay Kuan)
I prefer an affliated school, as I have a child that is taking PSLE next year & realize the power of affliatiion, the cut off point can defer as much as 10pts gap :(, so I was actually hoping to get St Nicholas - but was informed that as a PV, I should live within 1km which Im not
Is this true?
Though Nanyang is within 1km from my mum's place, but physical logistics will be a challenge, is there any \"preference\" for entry into NYPS if Im an old NYGH gal?
Would like to hear from the better prepared parents here - what do you think? and which school would you go for if you are in my shoes.. -

during your time as NYGH girl, was the primary school still part of the NYGH or was it a separate primary school already ?Hi,

you have priority if NYPS was still a section under NYGH, otherwise you have to be NYPS old girl to qualify -
Hi, thanks for the response. Unfortunately, NYPS is separated in 1978 from NYGH, nope, I have missed the boat, so not considered as a NYPS old gal

For NYPS, do you plan to register your child via the caregiver route, since it's within 1 km from your mum's place, not your place.Nanyang Primary - within 1km

If you are going by the caregiver route, your child will fall under the 1-2 km category, not within 1 km category, even though your mum's place is within 1 km from the school. -

Yes, if its NYPS, then it will be via the caregiver route, as physically, Im staying at Serangoon. Oh didnt realize that will mean I fall into the 1-2km route and if I dont do PV, then I will fall under Phase 2C, 2nd phase too
thanks for highlight, then maybe I should not look at NYPS but probably at Rosyth then, since its within 1km from where Im staying now, but still looking at possible balloting at Phase 2C 1st phase too if wo PV, isnt it?

If you are not an old girl of any of these schools, you'll be registering in Phase 2B at the earliest. By process of elimination, you can rule out Aitong and St Nicholas, where you'll have to be within 1km to even have a go at the ballot.
Why don't you apply for pv at all the other schools and see which ones accept you? That would help you narrow your options. -

If you do not apply for PV/GRL, yes, you fall under P2C, within 1 km.
Which school is your eldest child studying in? You may like to apply for a place for the younger child under Phase 1 in the school where the eldest sibling is studying in, and monitor the situation accordingly.
Narrow down your list, and apply as a PV for the school you are interested in, if you have the time. -

My eldest is at YZPS - no balloting required that time though I register her under Phase 2C, beyond 2km then. I like the school, its a school of long tradition 105years to be exact - but am now exploring to looking at another school that can push my younger ones abit more.
The fact that my eldest is in her PSLE year this year, thats where it dawn onto me the power of affliation, so I was leaning towards schools like St Nick, NYPS or even Kuo Chuan
but again Rosyth has the within 1km advantage - & if I do get selected as PV, then chances are firm & guaranteed for my No.2 & 3.
I have to say, Im now quite lost & cant make up my mind at all what to do - dun kn why suddenly so kancheong for my no 2 & 3...
I think I can only do PV for 1-2 schools max as Im a full time working mum, & now supervising my P6 for her PSLE too.. -

If you can be a PV, good. However, if you do not have the time to be a PV, the best way out is to apply with YZPS in P2A first while you monitor the situation in other schools. Rosyth has all along been a popular school, even before the PSLE top scholar surfaced last year. Hence, it can be quite scary applying with Rosyth in P2C.My eldest is at YZPS - no balloting required that time though I register her under Phase 2C, beyond 2km then. You can apply for a transfer to other schools if YZPS doesn't provide the challenge to your younger children subsequently. -

Hi QMS et all, you folks are all so good & have all the infor at your finger tips.
What if I apply for Rosyth for P2C & if I dont get the place, can I still go back to YZPS as the fallback route & secure a place instead then?
