I dun think catholic schools are 'losing' their mission. Coz from what I understand, their initial mission was to open catholic schools for children from under privilege homes. Regardless whether the child is catholic or not.

Of coz, from a catholic's point of view, I hope that they can give more privilege to Catholics so that they can provide more religious teachings which cannot be taught in normal sch.

if catholic schools dont do catholic teaching, then there is no evangelism to non-catholic students. except for bible time, i m not sure what kind of catholic activities they have

They do have catechism class for catholic students, and if you are not Catholics, you do not have to participate in the class.

To be honest, most Catholic Mission schools appear to be losing their \"mission\" ... or at least, seem to redefine them 😞

I suppose you could look at it another way - Catholic schools need to take in non-Catholics to do their duty of evangelising.

But I agree in some part - Catholic schools nowadays are not the same as the ones in the past that were run by men and women from religious orders.

And I do get the impression that some Catholic schools are Catholic in name only.

Catholic schools today are not run by men and women from religious orders...in fact convent school (pri) then was not run by a nun but the secondary school was.
Now, only Catholic students have to go for catholic classes but non-Catholics have moral and ethics class instead. Mass is not compulsory for everyone too...although I find it meaningful.

since the principal may not even be a catholic, as a catholic i sometimes wonder what benefit is there in sending the child to catholic sch. i m not sure how often is the mass, and though got bible class, i still hv to send the chlid to church catechism…and if the sch is so academically focused eg CHS, i cant see much ‘catholicism’ there.

Principal of daughter's school is Catholic. We are not Catholic, so daughter attends Ethics class every Friday while Catholics have Catechism.

Yes, CHS is very academically focused.

Oh, back in 1800s, Catholic schools take in all kids coz they are allowed to evangelize. Now with govt funding the schools, they cannot evangelize to non-Catholics anymore. Must be \"secular\" wor... So why take in so many non-Catholics? Because it is also a \"government-funded\" school like all the other schools. In the end, these mission schools lose part of the mission to provide a Catholic education for believers coz so many seats go to non-Catholics. If you talk to the archdiocese, they will say got plenty of other Catholic schools that are not so popular. So in their eyes, there are enough places to go around if you want a non-elite, Catholic education, far far away from home. 😐

Plus more and more principals are non-Catholics coz now must look \"meritocratic\". So why would these principals place Catholics over non-Catholic Parent Volunteers who help the school directly? That's why schools like CHS and St Nicks told the PVs they would get preference on the waiting list. On that note, I believe CHIJ Toa Payoh is more \"missionary\" in the sense that they don't accept volunteers. So Catholics and grassroots leaders get a better chance at Phase 2B. The non-Catholics at IJ Toa Payoh are mainly kids of old girls or those who get in at Phase 2C. That's perfectly fine.
