Secondary School CCA

It is sad that there are so few places left for sports and performing arts. Some are taken up by students with sports DSA. Indeed true that the CCA chooses the students and not the students choose the CCA.

i'm a member from a UG (NCC girls) and i really enjoy myself very much.
many people think ncc is too rough a cca for girls. i beg to differ. ncc has developed my character in many ways- how i adapt to things, and stuff. the camps and everything has taught me all the basic survival skills like field cooking and stuff. i do get many opportunities to learn many things
many people dislike a UG but really, if you put your heart and passion into it, you can really enjoy it a lot. -
How many hours do you put in NCC? I suppose you’ll have to do a lot of activities under the hot sun?

definitely!
but i enjoy it a lot. i don't know why. i guess for girls, we tend to enjoy a side of ours that we don't usually show. usually it's the guys who do not enjoy themselves in UG
and the girls who really take pride in their cca.
as for the hours... i'm a RV student, so i have cca trainings twice a week and it usually lasts from 2.50pm to 6pm (around there). tuesdays and fridays. and OCCASIONALLY during the school holidays (really rare compared to other ccas who meet like 4 times a week??) we have cca too. but i'm quite sad that there's so little cca sessions because i really enjoy myself
i wish there's more.

I have just joined this forum and read this thread... So i understand that to get minus 2 points off for 'o' levels my son has to get at least 20 points through the LEAPS system. But is there a preferred CCA my son should join to ensure he gets the points from participation & achievement (Representation, Accomplishment, Attainment)? Or he can join any CCA he wants to? I am asking this because i am rather doubtful about his CCA choice, He is is Maris Stella High and he wants to join the English Literature Society(ELS) ELS does debate & scrabble (YES THE BOARD GAME xD), If lets say he wins the scrabble competition will he gets the Achievement points?
Thanks a lot

yes , CCA chooses the students. My daughter was keen on dance with dance background since primary school , but did not get through the second round of audition and cannot join. she was very dissappointed.
Should't school give all students a chance during sec 1 selection ? -
Hi! My DS is in Sec 1 this year… And he is pondering whether to join uniform group or socities as CCA? Any advise??

Hi Herbie,
It depends alot on his interest. Choose something that he likes and enjoys and doesn’t mind committing time and effort. If he has no preference, I would think that Uniform group will make our boys tougher and more disciplined, compared to societies, which are mostly indoor activities. DH thinks that UG will prepare DS better for NS next time. -

However all the popular CCAs have limited places especially performing arts and sportssall:

Hi lizawa, Thanks! Your hubby’s suggestion is inline with my DH’s tot. He like robotics but he is unsure whether he will be selected for this CCA cos he does not have prior experience in sch although he took up robotics class enrichment when he was in P3 and he felt in love with it.
Tx
