May I know what is your son’s score for PSLE. I know kids in maintream who score above 265 are invited into ispark and you are allow to reject the invitation. My 2 friends’ ds rejected the ispark invitation.[/quote]

26++ but he got in the school via DSA. When did your friends receive the invitation? Thru phone, email or letter? How long were they given to consider?

Fm the recent post on the EMB:

        Sec 1
        ISpark : 81 (3 classes, 27 ea)
Wonder among the 81 how many took up GEP since P4?

Some may ask if there a need to go ispark or RI GEP class when at the end of 6 years all will do GCE 'A' Level. Why \"suffer?\" Ispark or RI GEP classes are definitely doing more challenging stuff and in the end students may not do well on papers and duno if that is disadvantage of anything/award along the way .
Why not? I don't see being in iSpark or RI GEP as 'suffering'. The kids who are in these classes are probably higher ability ones and would thrive at being challenged to reach their potential. I dare say some of the brighter students find Sec 1 rather easy and unchallenging because they're covering material they've already learnt in primary school. This is assuming that there is differentiated learning in these classes compared to the other classes.

They got in thru DSA too. My friends told me they rejected the offers and I did not ask for further details.

:? How did RI get into HCI thread??

Anyway, my personal concern is DS moving forward...how well he will adapt to the school, new classmates, new syllabus, programs, etc...how far he will continues to communicate openly to me.

品学兼优is the value I am brought up with. Thus values is important or maybe, as important to academic results.

Any 'senior' here with experience to share on how their son changed after entering HCI and how / what they are doing to keep up with the communication with their DS?

Fully agree. When my ds was selected for Pr GEP, like some parents we were also in a dilemma of whether to go or not to go ... having gone thru a year in the programme both ds and us found it is really an enriching and better programme (for him). At least it keeps him busy and not wondering around like last time. 😉 I can understand some of the anxiety parents have to struggle with when facing such decision but most important is not to stop them from developing to their protential.

ksasalways, my DS1 is in HCI Sec 3 this year. He has become more mature and independent in the last 2 years. He is doing well academically and also participates actively in CCA and other school activities. To keep up with communication with him, I told him to see me as his mentor and coach as well as tutor and care-taker. He approaches me when he encounters any difficult questions for academic subjects. He also chat with me about his involvments in other school activities.

My DS2 just entered HCI for Sec 1, I certainly hope he will enjoy and benefit from his HCI journey too.

                    GEP - 1% of total P3 cohort =500 (Boys + Girls)

Actual GEP cohort in P4 and thereafter < 500. Why? Not all take up the offer and for many reasons.
Ratio is usually Boys: Girls = 3:2
ie, Boys < 300 and Girls <200 and RI takes in about 150 GEP boys every year and based on RI Principal’s proclamation there will be about 170 GEP boys in RI this year thus left about <130 for other institutions. Most of these <130 GEP boys are probably n HCI, ACS(I) & NUSH and a few of them may be in DHS and RV.
HCI iSpark houses the GEP boys but I suppose the no are <=50 and about 30+ students are the top scorers mostly from neighbourhood schools located at the west.

I always thought HCI would attract a fair number of GEP boys, not <50. If RI has about 170 I would have expected HCI to attract at least 100 GEP boys.

                        HCI(Sec) iSpark - 3 classes and 27 ea, so u have = 81 +

                        ie, GEP boys <=81
I recall the iSpark Sec 1 name list (Yr 2005) and it had many non-GEP guys and they were the Platinum and Gold winners of SMOP; and some were even in the top 40s of the APMOP. Coincidentally they were the top scorers of their respective schools mostly at the west.
