:rotflmao: :rotflmao: Ya, its a learning journey for parents too. Sometimes, I cheat and ask my P6 gal. She's better at Hanyupinyin than mummy. 😉

Same here. I always disturb dd for hanyupinyin or check through the besta CD 668S :celebrate:

I get son to coach his sister in 汉语拼音...cannot remember the a o e mo po fo. Use the Besta 668 a lot for reference. At times, I do understand but don't know how to explain to daughter...son can relate better to her.

Thank goodness for older siblings....I'm lost when it comes to xu, ju, qu and xu, ju, qu with 2 dots on top... :scratchhead:

Yes, thank goodness for older siblings because I would have been totally lost teaching her the basics. I think I was one of the earlier batches who had to learn hanyu pinyin back then.

            Daddy 😧
Was looking at the Pri1 HCL textbooks... and was quite shock to see all the pages in hanyu pinyin... was at least expecting to see some simple 汉字... no wonder our chinese standards so JIAT LAT nowadays... how to get our kids to relate to 汉字 with only hanyu piniyin?

            :? :? :?
I strongly agree that by doing hanyu pinyin now may affect our children in recognizing the chinese characters...

My girl has forgotten many chinese words after the long Dec 2010 holidays and now she will start hanyu pinyin as a P1 student so I am really concerned. However, since we can't beat the syllabus, I have decided to do extra revision at home besides her school and 天下,I am doing all the chinese flash cards all over again to refresh her memory...

              Hi Daddy D,

Hanyu Pinyin is using english letters...that's where the prob lies...young kids will confuse with phonics. They need to master learning hanyu pinyin like 'bo po mo fo, a o e'....something like that, I am learning all over again too.

              confusing me too...
Imagine for fei(1) Ji(1).... instead of 飞机... the kid thought it's 飞鸡...

              :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

yes such incidents will happen!!! So try to read a bit more story books lor so that they at least will guess the correct \"ji\"... hahaha

Daughter brought home CL homework yesterday…to write the a e o i u and the 4 ‘tones’. We have been practicing how to pronounce these letters. Didn’t do anything related to English as it will confuse her.

                  Hi,

I just found out that my son’s kindergarten will not be teaching hanyu pinyin in K2. I have heard that the first half of primary one for chinese will be mainly hanyu pinyin. I have talked to some teachers. One commented that taking hanyu pinyin now will cause confusion with phonics and may make the kid complacent or confused when they learn it again in primary one. Another teacher commented that it is better to take it at a leisurely pace now so that the kid will be more confident reading Chinese in primary one, despite not knowing all the characters. This same teacher also commented that hanyu pinyin is taught quickly in primary one, leaving not much time for the kid to learn before it is tested. So its better to take it in k2.

Any thoughts or advice are greatly appreciated!

Most kids would have picked up HYPY in their kindy by K2, or parents would have sent them for enrichment classes to learn before they start P1..

I guess some kids will be able to pick it up quickily in P1.. .Maybe you can consider signing you kid for a crash course before P1 😉

                      Hi there

My child is in P1 this year. She is coping well because she learned
HYPY in K2. If your child’s kindy is not teaching HYPY, it might be advisable to enrol him in enrichment class, maybe during the June or Nov holidays.

                        Hi cambriant,

Yes, you're right, 1st half of P1 is HYPY. By P1, most of the students would have been exposed to HYPY and when the teachers teach, they tend to move at quite a fast pace so students who are not exposed to HYPY might find it challenging and confusing. I agree with auntie M and electron....maybe you might like to consider sending your child to some HYPY course so that your child can get some exposure. 😉
