It is sad that there are so few places left for sports and performing arts. Some are taken up by students with sports DSA. Indeed true that the CCA chooses the students and not the students choose the CCA.

yes , CCA chooses the students. My daughter was keen on dance with dance background since primary school , but did not get through the second round of audition and cannot join. she was very dissappointed.
Should't school give all students a chance during sec 1 selection ?

However all the popular CCAs have limited places especially performing arts and sports

Hi lizawa, Thanks! Your hubby’s suggestion is inline with my DH’s tot. He like robotics but he is unsure whether he will be selected for this CCA cos he does not have prior experience in sch although he took up robotics class enrichment when he was in P3 and he felt in love with it.

I have just joined this forum and read this thread... So i understand that to get minus 2 points off for 'o' levels my son has to get at least 20 points through the LEAPS system. But is there a preferred CCA my son should join to ensure he gets the points from participation & achievement (Representation, Accomplishment, Attainment)? Or he can join any CCA he wants to? I am asking this because i am rather doubtful about his CCA choice, He is is Maris Stella High and he wants to join the English Literature Society(ELS) ELS does debate & scrabble (YES THE BOARD GAME xD), If lets say he wins the scrabble competition will he gets the Achievement points? Thanks a lot

not all competitions will etitled u to have some points.
last yr, my gal (in another sch) took part in a few CCA' scompetitions,
even with winning of trophy, the teacher-in-charge did not give any additional point for it

Is the trophy for a non-SYF/nationals kind of competition? Maybe schools only acknowledge winners in nationals for sports and SYF for performing arts.

My teacher just told me today that some competitions are not recognised by the system. Not recognised, no points.

There was an ‘accident’ during the Judo competition so I told him to avoid Judo CCA. It is strange for a boy to do Gymastics CCA?

Your son must be really talented to be selected for so many sports. Is there another trial? For most sch, there is another trial where the coach will assess them. It's ok for boys to do Gymnastic, why not?

No lah, he is not very talented. My son passed the trail test for badminton as his opponent wasn’t paying attention during the test.

For Judo CCA, I think is not so popular after the accident. So they welcome everyone to join Judo.

If my son takes up the gymnastics CCA, I am concerned that my son will become short and muscular. Will that happened??

I was also thinking of sailing cca but i heard that he needs to have the equipment "boat". Not sure what is the cost of the boat.

Hi Herbie, gymnastic will not cause boys to be short, only weight-lifting will cause them to be short and muscular, if u look at men in weight-lifting competition, they are all shorter than usual, that's because they've been training even before puberty, so it affects their height. It's good for them to be muscular,especially for boys, dun u think so? What kind of accident happened during judo? I believe that boat will not be cheap, but since it's a cca, the sch may subsidise.

hi sall, one of sji sch noy was injured during the judo competition. I think that boy is still undergoing some treatment. Well, my son is thinking of joining fencing now. And the cost of the suit and equipment will cost 800 dollars! I think may be just encourage him to takeup gymnastics cos higher chance to participate in competition and get more cca points.


My ds also tot abt joining the guitar ensemble. So funny!
