ya I agreed, best to check with school and also their school diff standard therefore the school baseline mark is diff too. if just borderline can talk to school.

Are you saying your son is doing foundation Science now and you think there isn't a foundation science paper ? I checked the seab website, there is a foundation Science paper. See :

I had 2 students last year who scored 20++ in their school’s papers and the teachers never even mentioned ‘foundation’ to them before!


In the end, both of them managed to pass Maths at PSLE after intensive tuition (one of them started in Jan, ended with B and the other started in June, got a C).

Both of them had very very very weak foundation and I mostly focused on the basic skills instead of the challenging problem solving techniques.
And both parents, knowing their children’s abilities, were very thankful that their kids passed and managed to get into NA. They thought that their kids either had to repeat or go to NT!!

hi mrswongtuition, jus curious to ask if thr's assessment books available for foundation maths n science? my son was being ask to take foundation maths n science tis year P6 as he faired v badly in P5. I'm in total lost on how to help him. I hv engaged tutor but seems like the tutor not aware of wat is foundation.

From what I know is when the student score below 20 marks, then they take foundation maths. They are very very very weak. You can buy P4 book to let them do. They cannot do diffficult question.

Currently there's no assessment book available for foundation subjects other than the sample PSLE papers.

What I would recommend is this:
1. P4 STEP BY STEP MATHS by SIMON EIO (not the problem-solving/model one). Published by EPH. P4 book is ORANGE cover.
This book has very simple, basic skills. Go through all the basics slowly. Typically, I finish 1 chapter a week. This means that the child really needs to be hardworking and practice a lot.
2. Once P4 book completed, get the P5 book. Same thing, 1 chapter a week. If you start now, you will finish P4 & P5 book by end May.
3. For P6 topics, follow the textbook. Then, use the PSLE foundation sample papers available from school or popular to practise.

For Science:
1. Get a Science guide that is appealing to your child. Read out loud (take turns). Highlight key words and link back to topic.
Don't get those which are wordy. Get those which are STRAIGHT TO THE POINT. I think there's this series under SAP called Science Partners (they have a P3/4 book and a P5/6 book). Very simple and direct. Easy to understand.
2. Use: Conquer Science (not too difficult) to revise all topics. Should be able to finish all topics if done systematically.
3. Another easy to follow book: Science Revision Workbook by EPH. This has simple notes and the questions are simpler with a variation according to the 'smaller units' the book breaks up the topics into. Good to use with the above two books recommended.

When you mention no problems with MCQ and SA, does it mean the child is getting almost full marks in those areas and not making careless mistakes?
If yes, high likelihood is that the child has strong foundations but has one of the following problems:
1. Lack English skills to comprehend the problem sums
2. Lack the techniques to solve multi-step problem sums
3. Unable to visualize problems into models or as units

Usually for such students, it's very easy to help them improve. Simply focus on teaching them different model drawing techniques and problem solving techniques. With strong foundation, they will pick up easily.

P5 is crucial year for problem solving techniques. It's the best time to focus and emphasis on the different techniques available.
