      Hi Tamarind

I have restarted the Peter and Jane Keywords series with DS2 *Dob July 2005). He can read the Rigby Lime books, but I need him to say words by sight. However, He has read books 1a,1b, 2a, 2b through to 6b in the last 3 weeks. My questions is would the \"c\" books in the series improve his elementary writing. Did you use them on your DC?
      Hi optimistforum,
I never use the c books with my kids. In fact, I also do not let them do assessment books before the age of 6. In my blog, I wrote that when a child has read many books, he/she will naturally know how to write. I have also written many other tips in my blog.

This thread is meant for kids between 3 to 7 years old, who are learning to write. Many parents send their kids to creative writing class, however if the child cannot even write in sentences, then the class will be useless.

I would like to share my experience about how to encourage kids to write from a young age :
        http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-to-encourage-child-to-write.html

Please feel free to share your experience.

When are your kids able to write properly? 2+ or by 3 definitely? Or is it just because your elder is a girl, so motor skills abit more developed.

I am still helping my 2yo write (2yrs 4mths old). As in, he'd relate what he saw/did and I'd help write it down in a jotter book, then have them draw whatever he feels like it - scribblings basically. haah! altho' now he can start doing some lines & waves & circles. But certainly cannot *write* or *draw* anything meaningful, lah.

Yes it is true that some kids have very good fine motor skills at a very young age. My boy's fine motor skills is not as good as my girl, but I do not let him practice writing everyday. Instead, I develop his fine motor skills, and also inspire him to write. The details are in my blog.

Also read this page about When should a child learn to write :

We should allow young kids below the age of 5 to draw anything they want.

My 4yo boy loves to read but he doesn’t have any interest in writing and drawing. I think he takes after me. haha!

              Hi dimsum,
Yes she is experimenting with cursive writing 😉

One trick I used is when my girl needs me to buy something for her, I ask her to write little notes to remind me. I tell her that mommy is very forgetful, so she must write it down, put it on my table to remind me 😉

Boys may not like to write stories, they may prefer non-fiction books and general knowledge. For example, my boy learns the names of most of the countries in the world on his own. He likes to draw \"maps\", and write the names of countries, on his own initiative, and in the process, he practices writing.

                  Hello Mommies

I am unable to start new topic because of my KP$ and hence adding my question to the existing thread.
I am very much interested in enrolling my 7 year old son to cursive writing classes. I think he is already late in learning cursive and I can't delay it anymore. Its getting harder to teach at home with downloaded materials and books.
Tried hard to spot any such enrichment class that focus on cursive writing.

Does any of you know any such classes, please do let me know.

                  Thanks

Can't help on classes. Just wanted to say that 7yo sounds early to start cursive writing. I think they only start at around 9yo in the US and UK.

That’s a new information for me.

Many of his classmates can write in cursive now.
I will just let him give a try as he is the one seem to be interested. If can’t cope up will defer his classes.
If you come across any such class, please do drop a note here.
                      Thanks!
