Sigh! Matadorepy. I can see from your reply that you are not ready to accept objective views nor engage in a mature exchange, what with your laughing emoticons and all. I wasn't trying to engage in a verbal exchange with you, merely trying to share my point of view based on the facts I have.

One of the girls who was rejected by both RGS and NYGH is at NUSH. I didn't say she was from RPGS. I don't know if she's bringing honour to the school as I haven't seen the honours list of SMOJ.

By academic talents, if I'm not talking about Math and Science then obviously we're talking about languages, overall academic excellence, outstanding performance in FPSP, OM, IvP, debating, sports, leadership qualities etc.

As I said, I know personally of the Math Olympiad winners who didn't get through the GAT tests. Just because you don't personally know of any doesn't mean they don't exist.

Also, get your facts right about the number offered RGS DSA in RGPS. In 2009, at most 60+ were offered DSA by RGS. Of these, only a hand few were from mainstream. Definitely not the 100 you talked about. And definitely not 50 GEP/50 mainstream.

This is a parents forum. We're here to share our views as mature adults. Sometimes behind the veil of anonymity we choose to let our inhibitions go and engage in verbal exchanges which are not quite becoming of mature adults and parents. In such circumstances, I find it futile to continue any further discussions.
Sorry that you could'nt accept arguments and sorry about the emoticon part of things..Perhaps I overdo it. My apology for that ..

I was a parent of a 2010 P6 GEP girl at RGPS now at NUSH. Yes, I attended the DSA talk last year when they flashed the information about no of GEP Vs Mainstream which show about 46/47 GEP and equally no of mianstream DSAed into RGS in 2010. I don't know the figures for 2011. That is a fact and certainly not 60+ as you claimed. In RGPS, certainly almost a third of the cohort of 350s are in RGS.

And in my view having interact with the RGPS students(GEP Cohort), I do have very clear info about the schools and the DSA CO/WL for RGS/NYGH/NUSH. How easy it is for the RGPS girls to be in RGS/NYGH vs NUSH. My DD was a weird one of the few lot, only have eye for NUSH and NJC, No RGS/No NYGH which she could easily gone to like most of her GEP friemds (That's the reason why I keep saying going to RGS is so much easier ). NUSHS offered her WL and eventually she got her choice if not she would be in NJC today.

And here I am talking/sharing very specifically about my experience with DSA with NUSHS and RGS/RI from RPGS GEP girl. Some folks here can only \"generalise things to be discussed\" which I can fully understand since they seems to be involved in almost every thread of discussion here.

      That's all !!

haha - and when Lui Tuck Yew asked my ds2 if he wants to go SOTA, he said no. He is just not convinced it is good for his music development. And there are no CCAs either, so doesn't seem exciting enough to my boy too. πŸ˜‰

          matadorepy,

I write based on facts. I also write based on personal examples I know of. I do not generalize. And I do not appreciate your insinuating that I do, albeit with a smiling emoticon.

I know RGPS girls in the GEP 2009 batch and have spoken to the teachers and that is why I know that at most only 60+ (total of GEP and mainstream) were offered DSA by RGS. And of this, only a handful of mainstreamers. I also remember reading the stats online. So, to refute your claims that you saw at the parents briefing that 50 GEP/50 mainstream and total 100 RGPS students were offered DSA by RGS, here's the official statistics based on the slides presented by RGPS on 6 Mar 2010 (p.76 of 82 slides) :

          Direct School Admission (DSA)
          Year No accepted Acceptance Offers
          2009 110 124
          * 4 students from mainstream were admitted to RGS via DSA

The officials slides clearly state that only 4 mainstream were admitted to RGS via DSA. So it's a handful and not the 50 you claim.

Perhaps you were mistook the TOTAL DSA offers with those by RGS?

These slides were available on the RGPS site until recently but can easily be found by googling them.

Also, you wrote that almost a third of the 350 RGPS cohort is in RGS. Again, let me enlighten you with the correct statistics. The number of RGPS girls who enrolled into RGS in 2010 (inclusive of DSA and S1 central posting) is 90/91. Closer to a quarter than a third.

I understand that you are speaking specifically based on your experience with your dd and her friends. And based on their experience, you are correct to come to your conclusion. But their experience is not indicative of the entire experience of every GEP cohort in all of Singapore. And that's why I am giving you a larger picture.

I understand that you're very happy with your dd's posting and understandably so. NUSH is a great school for the exceptionally talented in Math and Science. However, in your enthusiasm, I would appreciate your not dismissing someone else's opinion with insinuations that the alternative view is untrue.

what do you understand about folks involved in almost every thread of discussion ?

where is your evidence of their \"generalise things to be discussed\" ?

you obviously do not know their personal experience and aren't you generalising ?

                INNOVATE:
Strong in general academic - RI/RGS/HCI/NGHS

Strong in math and science - NUSH*
Strong in music/visual or performing arts - SOTA*
                Strong in sports - SSP*
These specialised instituitions* are talent schools and nation's top PSLE pupils cannot get in just thru pure academics.
Regarding if it is easier to get into a school over another school via DSA, it is quite relative but the above basically summarises it all.

Hence, to majority of the RPGS GEP, it is certainly easier to get into RGS/NYGH than NUSH via DSA. But to a non-GEP girl who has Math and Science talent, then it would be easier for her to be accepted by NUSH than RGS/NYGH via DSA.

Regarding the claim that 50 GEP/50 mainstream from RGPS who got into RGS via DSA, I think there might be some misunderstanding there. It is a known fact that it is very hard for mainsteam students to get into RGS via DSA. So if you ask me, 4 is a more likely figure. Could the 50 or so mainsteam students figure be referring to the total number who eventually got it after S1-posting results were released?

I have been following closely these chats here . Did'nt know things can get so hot :x some time between parents .... Never mind as I personally believe it actually provide new insights rather ..

Like matadorepy (must have met/chat with you on briefing day ? ) ,I am a parent of RGPS GEP in NUSH this year. I was kind of disappointed that there are so few girls (29) in this year extremely small cohort of 138 vs 400/450 in RGS/RI.

I actually manage to chat with a key people (wont name their appointment else somebody quote me ) why the no is so small (after all provision is for 170) and so few girls actually got enrolled. His answer was this year PSLE Cohort was a few thousand less and NUSH intakes via DSA is extremely stringent. They emphasis quality which they sieved thru their internal testing rather than just meeting no of placings available. Also quite a no of them with multiple COs eventually turned down NUSH for named schools. The school only replaced those turn down cases with the selected no of small WaitList which incidentally was also poor as those also selected other CO over NUSH. Ask if they able doubt their intakes PSLE result, the guy feedback was \" unless you doubt your own testing process and criteria, PSLE (unless failed) is immaterial for the few no of so called under performance..\" Like the person said, \"If you can have a NUSH CO/WL, chances are you are already got CO in RGS/RI/HCI/ACS ... but not the vice versa .. after all we are still far more stringent than the best IP schools in general \"

How easy is it to get into NUSH as a GEP/Mainstream/Olympiad Medalist? It is still through the 2 round of testings same for all. I leave it to you to decide. I glad my DD was offered a place, a 2-2-2 modular system with No national examination. A few RGPS friends did not got in are 😞 in RGS/NYGH . Already she is full swing into triple science while her peers in IPs school are still ra ra over orientations and CCA. She is the kind of personality that fits well into the school system.

for most schools, new sec 1 students will be allocated classes according to the ranking of their PSLE results, with the best classes being called 1A,1B,1C…etc, E1,E2,E3, or 1/1,1/2,1/3, etc.

what about Crescent Girls Sec School? How are the Sec 1 students grouped into? are they also allocated classes in alphabetical/numerical order, with the better classes being A,B,C… and 1,2,3… ???

not necessary that best class must start with 1 or A...and if the school says there is no best class, then believe

for some schools, best class label is also random and they use a different letter / number from year to year. there is no acknowledgement from school to say which is best class

I am thoroughly impressed with the way that NUSHS have positioned and pitched themselves. From a institution with zero history and tradition, they have managed, by limiting intake, and setting tough entry criteria, transmorgified themselves from a potential ugly duckling into beautiful swan in short order. And guess what, having swiped the cream (or part of the cream), and not participating in national (benchmarking) exams, how can they go wrong??

Don't get me wrong, I am not taking a swipe at NUSHS. Its 2 bus stops from where I live and my boys (if by slim chance decide to be clever enough) may still consider it a choice. But right now, at least a part of it is hype. Strong schools with strong traditions, to me, are still the preferred choice.
