[Original Title: P2 English]
Can anyone help with this:
Rearrange the following words into a sentence.
\"he missed because he late was the bus\"
Answer 1 : He missed the bus because he was late.
Answer 2 : He was late because he missed the bus.
Which answer is correct and why?
Thank you.[/i]
It can be both.
ANSWER 1
1. He was late.
(Just say he needed to take a bus to school)
2. He ran outside and found out that he missed the bus
ANSWER 2
1. He missed the bus
2. He was late (because he missed the bus)
(Even I have to admit my explaination was no help! :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: ) -
Answer 2.
He was late because he missed the bus. (This sentence explains the reason why he was late. He missed his public transport.
Answer 1 is tricky. It is only meaningful if it is phrased more specifically this way:
He missed the schoolbus because he was late.
Typically we take it that schoolbus has a designated time of arrival and the purpose of the bus being there at that time is to fetch him. There is more precision in the time.
For public transport, the time of arrival is at best estimated, never a fixed precise time as its purpose is to serve the public not to fetch a specific person. -
ksi:
Agree. Answer 1 is not acceptable under normal circumstances.Answer 2.
He was late because he missed the bus. (This sentence explains the reason why he was late. He missed his public transport.

Sentence Re-arranging.
Rearrange the following words into a sentence.
"he missed because he late was the bus"
Answer 1 : He missed the bus because he was late.
Answer 2 : He was late because he missed the bus.
Grammatically, the answer should be #2. He was late. (The reason is because he missed the bus).
If this question was tested in P3 under ‘Synthesis & Transformation’, the answer would definitely be #2. The question would be:
He missed the bus. He was late (because). -

Janet,Hi Mummies,
Any recommendations for a good English grammar-cum-vocab reference book ? Thanks.
I bought this book some time ago for my use and I am still using this to teach my dd.
ENGLISH GRAMMAR HANDBOOK FOR SINGAPORE
(SECONDARY) Preston publication
for my dd I bought Learners' Basic english grammar & essential English Grammar.
STUDENT'S HANDBOOK TO ENGLISH (vocab) p1&2, P3&4....
that also from preston. -

Daughter's P1 booklist recommended Learners Basic English Grammar (blue) but it doesn't include vocab like 'collective nouns', 'similes'. Was thinking if there is a 2 in-1 (Grammar and Vocab).
