NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)

I am not quoting anyone. I just feel that NUS High just want to be careful and choose the RIGHT student to go in, instead of just choosing anyone and end up both parties will suffer and i think the kid will suffer most because they will be wasting their time there. This is what most of my friends and me feel after a lot of discussions on why NUS High is so strict in their selection. I attended their open hse last year, they give me an impression that if they find the kids not suitable, they rather let the kids go to another school that is most suitable for him rather than spending their 6 yrs there. I prefer this type of selection. Although it looks cruel but isnt that better instead of wasting our time and $.

- how many COs did NUSH give out during Phase 1 of 2010 DSA exercise?
- how many on WL were subsequently given COs?

90% of the intake is chosen at phase 1 of DSA. the other 10% given out after PSLE result is released. Based on reported intake of 140 for 2011 Sec 1, that means 14 were offered to applicants after PSLE result were released

is anybody applying dsa for NUS high this year?

Yes my DS. It has been his and our dream school and only school that he wanted to go in since 3years ago. But I heard from my friends that it is very difficult. This year 2000 applying and only like less than 150 go in and psle they only take less than 14? And their psle cut off point is 264. Pls correct me if I am wrong. So hoped my DS has a chance. His math and science since pr 3 is A*. I think by DSA is very difficult for him as his knowledge out of the text is not so strong but his studies is all the while top 5 in the whole school.
So, can anyone please advise me will my DS suffer over there if he is acceped by PSLE instead of DSA? Will he be able to understand or cope over in NUS High? Again, this batch is 264, this year will be higher, right?

A friend's dd tried out for NUSH DSA a couple of years ago. She couldn't get in and was not offered CO or WL. It was her dream school and she tried again post-PSLE results and managed to get in. She is doing well in the school and even does better than some of her classmates that got in through DSA.

I might be wrong.. But they are the only school which conducts DSA purely based on that person must be talent in Math and Science , that the 'Right' student i mean. But other IP school can be 'sports' 'music' 'acadamic' as well..and they take in more students...also, they have S1 posting and again they take in more students...., so they have a total of about 400 places but for NUS high, they only have about 140 places, and you might have high PSLE reults but they can dont select you if you do not have the talent in Math and Science. Also students do not take 'o' and 'A', so to me, that is very very New......
I am just curious and new here, can i know which school did your DS or DD go?

I understand that their physics and chemistry are at a higher level, which means difficult. So if the students there cant cope, did they go for tuition?

Have your son try out for the DSA. If he's good enough he'll make it through. If he doesn't, have a go again post-PSLE. My friend's dd is very strong in Math and Science but weak in languages.

as some parents have argued : a cohort of 140 is necessarily limiting the intake compared to a cohort of 450

enough said. must say NUSH is the best and the most difficult to enter in Singapore

fyi, students of HCI & RI at Sec one are doing Physics, Chem & Bio at O level, based on the book list they are given to buy. I believe it is similarly the same in RGS/NYGH. For math, they are doing topics like quadratic inequality and polynomial etc etc
