ChiefKiasu:

Now, that makes you wonder how that boy who topped the level feels about it, doesn't it? Assuming that the boy did sit for the GEP testing and got rejected, is the system telling him \"hey, no matter how hard you work, you will never be GIFTED in my book\"?

I think I would be really sore and demoralized.
      hi ChiefKiasu,

The boy did sit for both the screening and selection test. His mother told me that he felt very demoralised.

I feel sad under this kind of system. On one hand, it is a very good programme that cater to the needs of the gifted children. On the other hand, it would make some other students feel demoralised.

In many countries, 'gifted' is defined as 2-3 percent. It is unique that only top 1 percent being selected under S'pore system. Perhaps, it would be better to open other classes for those being selected in the screening test.

        gifted:
        Hi Vicky,

I'm not too sure what she read. She is a very independent reader and she read very widely, especially science. As long there are books around, no matter friction or non friction, she will pick up and read. She had good memorise and can remember the facts after reading it. Frankly speaking, I can't even understand sometime. I left her in the library when I go shopping and she would sit there and read till I picked her up. Cos' she hate shopping. πŸ˜‰
        hi gifted,

        Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚
The top student in our school did not even make it through the first round of screening. But continue to top the cohort for the rest of the years.
The top girl in my girl's ex-school also did not make it too. Her parents were a bit surprise. She not only top the corhort, the class and she also top in 2 subjects. I even made a comment when I was talking to my girl's form teacher about her that she was 'SUPER'. The teacher just said that she is a very hardworking girl.

So be it gifted or not, hardwork too count. She might be the top scorer for year 2010 PSLE.

As far as I know, the majority that get through the GEP screening are boys. Last year the ratio is abt 3 boys to 1 girl.

He missed one question in the paper but didn't know until the end, so all his answers in the OAS (optical answer sheet) did not match the question number. πŸ˜›
How can the system train/develop gifted children when the system is so rigid and flawed? I thought the the right thing to do is to accord the scores as though he had skipped one question and grade him accordingly :? ... Or rather an interview may be conducted to ascertain his understanding of the questions and what his answers were.

I think MOE has realized this as well. So the new initiative is to mix the \"high ability\" students with the GEP students in a class to do some subjects together. This only happens in the GEP primary schools. So selected students from the mainstream will get to do some higher order stuff with the GEP students.
How did he knows his result?? The paper was not allow to take back and marks were also not review for both the 2 rounds. Parents with kid who got it through post question to the representative from the MOE. He wanted to know what is the score of his son before he made his decision whether to let his son to opt for the programe. Some parents there just wanted to know where their kid stands, the top 10% or the bottom 10% out of the 500+ kids being selected. When I was at the briefying, I discovered actually it was the parents themselves who were the kiasu ones. Already being selected into the programe, why matter the top or the bottom?? How bottom they can go, the most be the no. 500+ only. That what I alway tell my girl. πŸ˜‰

Pls click on the following to see the differences between a bright child and a gifted child. Bright children almost always top the class but not necessarily so for gifted children. Their motivations are different.

Well, he doesn't know. But he knew at the end of the test that he made that mistake. Probably it was his parents who have told him that if not for that mistake, he would likely to end up in the GEP πŸ™‚
Bright children almost always top the class but not necessarily so for gifted children.
Gifted children are really talented in certain specific area. The first GEP screening focuses on Maths and English. Those who made it past the first round are probably top 6 - 8%. But not sure if this screening cater to those who are talented in areas other than Maths and English.

Thanks... The chart is very useful as a reference for parents to know what to expect of their child πŸ˜‰
