agreed. what is fair and unfair? eg. a baby born with a silver spoon in a rich family vs a baby born in a poor family? ultimately the baby born in poor family may work hard to build his wealth - rags to riches story, whereas the baby born in rich family may squander his family wealth away. everyone has a choice of choosing the path he wants to carve out for himself, although i must say a bit of luck would be helpful…

Yes.....an old topic, but never conclusive till someone someday proves it scientifically, either way.
Whichever side we take, there are numerous success stories of great achievements of people coming from humble background through hard work. There will always be success stories from both sides. My point is why not concentrate our efforts and strive to our fullest potential with the resources we have. Time and energy will be wasted unnecessarily to pin point the system which could not always make everyone happy.

who are to say that children of uneducated farmers cannot become scholars ? the farmer parents did not have the opportunity to attend schools, that is all
farmers being just an example of those i know of. nothing \"elite\" about the parentage to talk about, and the kids go to kampong schools too....pri school has an advantage up to a certain extent only. from sec 2 or 3 onward, everybody with the same ability and diligence will catch up
there are also plenty of kids from the branded schools who become part of the \"faceless\" mass in society....nothing demeaning too.......
in other words, what i am saying is this : nothing very unfair about it. hardwork and diligence will be a great leveler at a later stage -
Nothing is fair in this world, even when comes to P1 registration. So Parents if you have a particular school in mind, either perform Grassroot Leaders, or PV so as to secure a place.
When doing PV, you must inform the school that you are readily available. Anything please call me. Just be prepare that your company not to fire you due to frequent absent from work. If can, best to quit & doing PV like a FT. I had seen some parents in this extreme. :celebrate: -
I think I am living in a make-believe Matrix world…
Being raised in Singapore has indeed caused us to be malleable unquestioning citizens, where performing contortions (40-80 hours worth) for the authorities that be, in exchange for a progeny’s shot at a premier school, is not deemed an act of insanity. And for the progeny’s advantage to linger, through no merit of his own, for a Phase 2A priority spot for HIS progeny, is considered fair play.
Nobody thinks this is a barrier to social mobility? For the rich to get richer? The influential to accrue more influence?
The World is Flat, but P1 admissions sure is not. -
The need for segregation resulted in the need to have a system in place. When there are different category of primary school, the selection system can’t be fair to all. "Lesser" contentious arguement will be based on parent’s alma mate for awarding earlier phase/entry.
The system also allows for those without parentage advantage to have a chance in what they believe is good for their kids (ie Phase 2B) which one can choose to become a PV, GRL, clan…etc.
However, i have my reservation with PV - cos there are simply to many cases where "well qualified" person is tasked to do mundane job and it makes me wonder ???
PV selection is based on P and his/her team without MOE involvement.
Where is the transparency ?
Who are they accountable to ?
Who should they be accountable to ?
Do they publish who are selected and for what reason(s) ?
Do they actually perform what they are choosen for ?

As to the contention that PV system somehow benefits the schools, I'd like to see the evidence that this is actually true or that it could not be done in a different way. I mean, if one were TRULY trying to improve school services, why not allow the putative PV to nominate and/or pay for someone else more qualified to do the job? I.e, is it better for a dentist to spend an afternoon doing library duty and cancelling his appointments with patients who need his help, or for him to hire someone, (or voulunteer a friend) to sit in for him? If it is all about service provision to schools, there are ample ways to do that more effectively than dragging reluctant parents from their day jobs.
The transparency issue, don't even go there! The folk posting in support of PV invariably have been those that have succeeded in being picked, and generally have their child entered. How about the hundreds of parents that get turned away, or due to life circumstance, do not have the opportunity to put in so much time? Are their children therefore less deserving? Where, in all of this, is the fairness?
It is, IMO, nothing more than a parent selection exercise. -
Tao Nan PV selection is transparent.
Early applicants are rejected and advised to re-apply when application is open. Application will close once there are more than enough applicants.
All applicants are then invited to the school auditorium where they will brief on the school’s past years result, past years registration statistics, especially which distance balloting had occurred & the odds. And finally the duties.
Then applicants’ name are dropped and picked from a ballot box in front of everyone. As each applicant is picked, he or she choose the duty.
And PV is meant to involve the parents in the schools operation and activities, similar to PSG. It is Not for their $$$$. -

I think under the current system, one of the main \"problem\" lies with those parents being \"rejected for PV\" not being explained why they were not selected. Yet again, if they were told, things may be worst................ :clubmyself: -
