      hi,

My gal is registering P1 next year 2012 and having a hard time trying to decide on which school I have a better bet on.
I stay just opp Rivervale Primary (< 1km) but from past history, always have to ballot even < 1km for Phase 2C. Did not manage to get into PV for Rivervale Pri.

I am currently doing PV with Compassvale Pri (staying 1-2km) but only clock few hours.

Should I go for Compassvale Pri in Phase 2b and complete my PV hours or should I register for Rivervale Pri in Phase 2c ?

Rivervale Pri - pull factors are nearer to my hse and it seems a more popular and better all-rounded school ???

Can someone give me advice on which phase I should go for ? And also any comments on how is Compassvale Primary and Rivervale Primary in terms of pupils academic results, staff, ECA ??

      Thanks.

Thanks! I went to the website and I found that if I use the centre point of the school to the centre point of my block, it will be less that 1 km. But If I use the furthest point of the school and my block it will be slightly more than 1km..haha..think still got chance right? It's so amusing that parents in Singapore had to pay attention to these small details when it comes to school registration..

When you are in OneMap, you should go to the SchoolQuery, rather than measure distance. Check to see if your house is in the \"red zone\" (within 1 km).

From past history, both Compassvale and Rivervale would need to ballot under phase 2C even if u stay within 1km.

My view is since u are already a PV in compassvale, why dont u complete the 40 hours to qualify for 2B in compassvale? At least u would be quite assured of a chance as I see there was no balloting conducted for compassvale under phase 2B for the past few years. Why give up ur 2B status and subject yourself to the balloting risk in rivervale? And if u do not succeed balloting in rivervale, u would not even have compassvale to fall back on.

If u really like rivervale so much, what u can do is complete ur 40 hours at compassvale, and register in 2B there first. Then during the 2C registration u can monitor rivervale's situation. If by any luck no balloting is required for those staying within 1km next year, or u deem ur odds very very good and u want to risk the chance, then u can quickly withdraw ur application in compassvale and register in rivervale under 2C.

U have only a few more months to complete ur 40 hours in compassvale. Do consider it carefully and dont waste ur pv chance. 40 hours is not that difficult to clock. All the best!

Thanks ! That was kind of my plan was to clock the 40hrs for Compassvale Pri and then see how the balloting results for 2c for rivervale pri.

Can anyone share how is Compassvale Pri and Rivervale Pri in terms of school staff, teachers, academic, ECA and students ? Is it a good school environment ?

One of the advantages of doing PV work is to know the school environment, students, teachers etc before u enrol ur kid there. Hence u should take the opportunity during ur PV work to find out such info about compassvale. As for rivervale, u can visit the school during its open house, if there is one.

I have only done like 3 hrs of PV work in Compassvale Pri so far... sad to say ... so can't tell much yet.
Is there any thing I should look out for when I do PV next time ? So that I can know what questions to ask and look out for. Thanks.

But in terms of students academic and teaching in both Compassvale and Rivervale Pri - anyone knows ??

Haha u should quickly clock ur hours to find out more. If u are helping out in school activities and such, u can easily interact with the students there and see how the teachers perform too. And as a pv there is plenty of chances for u to walk around and tour the school to see the environment.

Frankly speaking my view is if ur are comfortable with what u see during ur PV work in compassvale, just register ur child there and dont think about rivervale anymore. It is quite unlikely that u can get into rivervale without balloting even if u stay within 1km based on past history. Why give urself additonal headache? Based on past 2C trends, compassvale is also very popular so my guess is it cannot be too bad academically-wise as compared to rivervale? Unless u have other areas of concern?

For the academic standards of the 2 schools, u can check their websites to see whether they publish past PSLE scores or what. Or u can try asking ur question under the Parents Networking Forum and post in both Rivervale and Compassvale threads to ask the parents opinion there.

Actually my hb is the one that really like Rivervale Pri due to distance and the school. He insist not to lose the balloting chance as even the odds are not good but still can try our luck. Which for my opinion is very risky.
I see their web site dun publish PSLE results, any other places to look for their past year results ?

                    Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I see Rivervale Pri results are published. Compassvale Pri - not in their website.

well if ur husb wants to try his luck then by all means go ahead. Just make sure u get a back up plan should u not succeed. And note that compass vale would definitely not be available by then.
