      ParentOfXJ:
that explains.. wow, didn't expect them to start this early.. CHS really takes these things seriously.. time for us to figure out what my son is good/interested in so he can participate in some of these.. more active that way

You'll soon realise how things work. ;D I'm amazed that they are starting to push for performing arts cca so early this year too - at the p1 orientation! And then the principal stress that students can use it for DSA next time.

Then the other day when I went to kaypoh and watch my son's performance at Fun Friday, I heard the principal saying the same thing \"can use for DSA\". Aiyoh - the world so beautiful, huh? So easy to use for dSA, ah? Ask him to PROVE it first, lah. How many boys from CHS Pri are even offered DSA to CHS Sec every year? Less than the fingers in 1 hand lah, and often out of 10 taken in under DSA for a particular CCA, sometimes none are CHS Pri boys. Talk about being loyal. It's actually easier for them to try in other schools.

Have sports, dance chinese orchestra and sometimes band. It's really weird. The performing arts cca that they promote so heavily in chs pri may not have their equivalent in sec either. Eg. Band - no DSA for chs sec for past 2 years. And STrings - no Strings in Sec school - Mr Lee Hak Boon is so resistent to setting it up, not sure why. So the string boys would have no equivalent cca to join when they go to sec, if in chs.

DSA should be for everyone. Why must it not be given equal chance to those in affiliated schools? It's not that way in other schools.

It's probably easier to DSA to Dunman High under CCA. RI & HCI doesn't have this option for performing arts cca DSA - which Mr Lee is promoting as one of the reasons for joining CCA in pri school? NYGH has performing arts CCA DSA, but then ours are boys - wrong gender . 😉

That's why now in the pri performing arts cca, there are many pri boys that join, not bc they want to themselves, but bc they say their parents told them to join for DSA. What kind of warped reason is that? That's why I think what Mr Lee is promoting is very misleading bc it is not really a route the kids should be thinking of. CCA should be for their personal non-academic development, not just for DSA. Furthermore, DSA by performing arts CCA is NOT easy.

In case you don't know, there are chs pri boys who do get dsa offers from chs sec, altho' it is rare. And there are DSA offers NOT according to the list specified in the dSA application form. eg. under leadership(there's no domain for that).

                that’s really strange.

i stil wonder how many percentage of boys get to stay back in chs sec.

cca shd b for personal interest but if its meant for dsa, shd be at least eligible for dsa in own sec or other better sch. or at least for something that one can continue to join in sec sch.
esp for performing cca, if the child is disciplined, smart, can cope well in both cca n academic, ok. but if the child is just average, she or he is gonna suffer to go for thrice or 4, 5x in cca n no time to study. she or he may be fighting for the sch’s honour in cca, for the sch glory but in the end achieve nothing for own psle goal, and end up being kicked out of own sch becos cant achieve the high COP

Now that's why I say it should be for personal achievement. If the child were to join a cca not for interest, he may end up not doing well in it after all, so it would not have been time spent in a worthwhile manner.

Most of the 50 gep students would go to RI, HCI or nUSH. None go to CHS sec, I'd think. As for the remaining 190+ students from non-gep, I think around 50% qualify to go into CHS sec. However, among those, quite a number also go to IP schools like RI, HCI, NUSH, NJC, as well as SJI, ASI, etc.

If CH boys are all leaving for other schools, it doesn’t speak well of the Sec section.

Hi, I live very near CHS and am considering sending my ds to the school. He is 5 now. Any idea how many non-Chinese boys there are in the Pri Sec? My son will be taking Chinese as a second language.

Not sure how it would work out in the next few years as CHS becomes IP in 2 years' time.

I'm sure there are a few boys in each cohort. My ds2 has at least 1 non-chinese classmate and 4 others who are ethnic chinese but foreigners (eg. Indonesians) who do not have any chinese-speaking family background. Their parents don't speak/read/write Chinese. They are all doing Higher Chinese though.

                        Thank you, phankao.

Finding a suitable Catholic boys’ school which is grounded in holistic development is going to be a uphill task.
