      Chenonceau:

Problem is that almost all our Ministers are men, with supportive wives (EVEN IF the wives work). We need 2 or 3 women ministers who have supportive husbands to get this through 'cos the men don't get it.
Even if the wives of the minister are working, they only work as consultant. I know of one which is like that.....that wife work only 2-3 times a week with approx $28K per month. Went to their house for CNY and my boys were given $100 as ang bao.

Yeah, I'm a bit left field on some issues, and not shy to share them. As my friend Way2Go tells me, I have a style issues.

Enough strong opinions for one day, before I get banned.....

MM's wife raised the 3 kids.

How many male ministers can raise their hands and tell people they played a big part raising their kids ? If they can put themselves in wives' shoes, well maybe they will understand better.
the 'hard truths' book says Mrs Lee made sure to be home for lunch every day, while MM Lee made sure to be home for dinner with the kids every day (except for overseas travelling and official functions, I guess)

Makes me wanna migrate there now..................$350 a month till the kid is in their teens WOW! but then again they do pay much higher taxes (but I've heard folks who migrated to Aust who say they don't begrudge the taxes one bit for the better work-life balance there).
Yes.... wonder if it comes at the cost of higher taxes. If it does, I rather not have it.

Was talking to a friend from Sweden. They only pay $200 for child care. Maternity benefits are pretty good as well. But he told me that 50% of his salary goes to different form of taxes (including personal income tax). :faint:

my lunch is only 1 hour. Not enough time to travel to and fro from work to home with kids. 😞 coz my chauffeurs are my pair of legs, public bus and MRT.

for the late Mrs Lee, her office to home is 7 minutes, based on what the book says

Mrs Lee runs the law firm…she is the boss. She can afford to spend lunch time with the kids. Hey, she is the mother and understands.

Canada does the same, including immigrants' kids C$300 per month cash till the teens, plus medical benefits etc

Tough work for SG government to attract immigrants to sink root here.

I don't have such luck. If I were to stay nearer to office, I have to fork out close to $700K for a HDB flat. 😞

                        insider:
Reading the content of this thread sets my mind thinking a bit OT - about gender equality.

Maybe coz of my Chinese education or perhaps due to my age, I am alright not to let my husband not doing much housework or to be taking over equal responsibility of raising our kids. If he does chip in, is good; else it is also fine with me. This willingness to 'suffer' maybe partly due to my ability to take stress and workload in positive manner.

I still belong to that generation of thinking whereby a wife has to serve her husband (of course husband has to be a responsible one to begin with). I can bring bedroom slippers for my husband, put in front of him for him to put on, etc. My thinking is not so much of I being submissive but doing all these out for a man whom I treasure.

Am a relatively strong woman from young, but I still prefer to let my husband stand in front of me to 'protect' me where necessary. So, doing things that may seem 'submissive' for him are perfectly fine with me and so I don't ask for equality at all...

Before we talk about birth rate, perhaps we have to look at 'marriage rate'. The concept of Gender Equality is one of the causes of higher divorce rate - that's what in my mind somehow...
just reported in the news that for 2010, the divorce numbers is higher than the marriage numbers, in China.
