        Hi Mummies,

My daughter has CL spelling today…really sweat to start 汉语拼音 again.
Realized both my kids have problems differentiating between the 2nd and 3rd tones. For eg 鱼 and 雨, 蛙 and 娃.

Now I have another query about han yu pin yin.

One of my gal's spelling words is \"niu nai\" (milk) and I noticed the word \"niu\" has intonation on the u instead of i. Shouldn't it be following according to the vowels \"a e i o u\" if there are 2 vowels in a pin yin word?

Then I saw \"pai dui\" (line up) and the word \"dui\" has the intonation on the i this time.

            I'm confused. :?

            Hi chic_savvy,

Intonation follows the a, o, e rule then lastly both i and u.

'i' and 'u' have special rule: the intonation is always on the last vowel. So if 'i' in the last alphabet, the intonation is on the 'i'. And if 'u' is the last alphabet, the intonation is on the 'u'. In the example you quoted, niu - the last alphabet is u so the intonation is on 'u'. In dui, the last alphabet is' i', so the intonation is on 'i'. Hope this helps.

If I am not wrong, my daughter ever recite a short message about the 有\"a\"不放过,.... then the last phrase is \"i\" \"u\" 并列标在后.

I used her textbook to teach her...since all the pictures and hanyu pinyin are included. There are 4 characters she must know. yi1 (1), wu3 (5), yu3 (rain) and wo3 (me)

I ran through the books for my gal and found this Chinese activity book for P1…found it interesting instead of hanyu pinyin all the time. It’s by Learners 怡学. Title is 学习华文乐乐乐.

Learners caters from preschool all the way to P6.
I happened to see this 学习华文乐乐乐 while browsing the books around the Chinese section...available for P2 as well.

My hubby told me one of us should speak to daughter in Eng, the other to her in Mandarin. After attending briefing last night for P1, he started to worry about the high expectation from the school.

The HOD for Chinese said it is necessary to get the kids to understand ci2 yu3 for eg ‘hua1 sheng1’ (peanut), ‘hu2 die2’ (butterfly). By itself, ‘hu’ doesn’t make sense but when hu die is put together, it means butterfly.

                        The rules are confusing.

Which means if we don’t know the word and just based on listening, we will get the tones wrong. Like 蚂蚁,洗手,举手 etc.
