Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

Hi php,


Your idea is quite ideal but but… the kid, his mummy cannot tahan the stress le… Also dun really wish to stress kid out too.
My sister’s son has just graduated from NH in 2010, so am thinking I can get info much easier thru my sister if my kid goes to NH.
Plus traffic from Taman Jurong to NH at Clementi, should be smoother compare to SV at CCK.
Another reason is I prefer single session
My sister mentioned the teachers in NH are very academically focused and pay full attention to good students, let go the normal one. Anyone heard of that?

NH is a SAP school.
SAP schools tend to be academically focused. As for teachers paying more attention to better students, I'm not sure about that. My son is in a SAP school but an average student. Even though SV is not a SAP school, but principal is also academically driven from what I understand.

I'm not sure if this is where I should be posting this question but I'd appreciate all the opinions you parents have. Pls redirect me if i've posted in the wrong thread..


My 1st is gonna attend his P1 next year & I have narrowed down to 3 schools.

Tanjong Katong Primary
Reason being - Dad is an old boy., therefore Direct entry. Their sports activities entice us plus our boy is more of an outdoor person. Our boy has shown interest in Golf recently & the school has that as CCA.

Hougang Primary
Reason being - Their close proximity to our 2nd's childcare centre. Plus they have a student-care which our 1st can attend before/after school. Teachers from the childcare centre can fetch our boy when he finishes school. HPS fantastic array of outdoor activities/expeditions is very enriching as well. Would make his 6 years in school an enjoyable experience. However, spoke to the teacher from HPS, about 40 applicants were not succesful last year.

North Vista Primary
Reason being - Brand new. Prob no balloting is required. Opening hours at 8am is perfect. No rush in the mornings.

We live in Punggol Field & we fall nowhere near the 1km range of these schools, therefore our chances are narrowed, specially for Hougang Primary.

We're both working parents and we have actually checked for a transport that could fetch/send if supposedly we were to go for TKPS. If we were to choose HPS, is it too late to find a house near HPS now & I'm really unsure if its a good idea to move closer.

Currently none of the pirmary schools in Punggol area attracts us.

If these are the only 3 sch u R interested in, u only have 2 choices cos HGPS is out of your reach (more than 2km does not even gif u a chance to ballot at phase 2c).

TKPS has a gd mix of int'l students and pretty interesting CCAs. If u dun mind the distance, it shld gif a chld pretty gd exposure.

NVPS is quite new and the effectiveness of their teaching mtd has yet to be established (no past yr's PSLE results to see yet). Of course it is much closer to whr u R staying and the late sch starting hours are pretty attractive. However u oso have to bear in mind the later hrs of dismissal.

Since both schs do not have stellar PSLE results to boast abt, it is really pretty much up to u on the kind of environment u wish to gif yur child.

how about this...go for SV...get yr kid to study hard and get into GEP...then transfer your kid to NH....so you have the best of both schools........

Er.. Just to moderate expectations a little, study hard does NOT equal to GEP...

I'm already planning DD's pri 1 registration. She is 3 turning 4 this yr. I can register her at MGS under phase 2B, but heard that this school is super hard to get in. Even phase 2B got to ballot. And we are not staying within 1km, so chances even lower.


Even if we were to sell our current place and buy an aptment near that school, also no guarantee of entry. May still have to ballot, so is it worth all that trouble and risk of not getting in?

A friend advised me to try Paya Lebar MGS, say it's easier to get in than the elite MGS. But I heard that this school has some discipline problems, not sure if it's true?

any advice and input is much appreciated, cos this whole issue has caused me and DH some stress, so much so that he even dreamt about him balloting in a school! :roll:

Yup MGS is super hot...even those staying within 1km have to ballot. The reason is bcos it is all girls with affiliation...and only school in bukit timah with that benefit. Have you considered SCGS?
