Hi 24hr-mum,

My friend and I joined TAS at the same time last year. Her son could apply the phrases he learnt and techniques and started improving quite fast. Mine learnt the phrases abut could not apply well and also he would make grammar mistakes still in his compo. The TAS teacher told me that his foundation was weaker and so he would need more time to master the techniques. I continued and now I have started to see some slight improvement in the way he strings his sentences together.

I think for compo and compre, need to be patient, some children learn very fast and seem to pick up fast but some quite slow. For me, I could see that the my son really enjoyed the lessons at TAS so I continued and now I start to see some results. Glad that I did not give up.

I think you must feedback to the teacher and work it out, TAS has open feedback system so you can work with teacher to help your child if you find he is not learning well.

Another thing I like is recently my friend's older girl who is in P6 got a call from the admin side and they said they were giving the upper pri kids extra tuition at a very low cost for the next 2 weeks to help them get ready for exams. My friend only needed to pay $15 for 2 extra hours. They only offered to upp pri because upp pri work is much more and they are the ones who are taking psle soon so they need more help. I was happy about that, to me, it showed the centres dedication to the kids.

my p3 girl started compo classes since p1 (joyhouse, success learning at p1, then mindstretcher at p2).
p1 no exam
p2 sa2 compo she got 6.5/10 - is this considered good or average?
her friend who didnt hv tutiion got 6/10, so i wonder if the 2-year compo class werent effective (tho i know my girl being 1 jan bb, is 1 year younger than her peer).

her lang is ok, did apply some phrases but content just not illogical, just like her character lah…
hence i m trying tas now…

I suggest you feedback to the teacher her problem and monitor her work closely and feedback more if you feel certain things are not resolved.

DS1 is attending the P1/P2 class. Thus far, based on what I can make out. They give out sheets with grammar rules and teacher will go through that with them. There are exercises to reinforce and I see DS1 circling out the key words in each question. Class is quite interactive - they have Q&A session (I gather it was grammar and its application they were testing on) and points are awarded to children who could shout out the answer.

He just came back last week and told me that his teacher told them to be kaypoh in comprehension - ie read the question first and then read the passage. This is a good trick - one that I forgot to tell him before.

They've started the library this week. DS1 discovered Spiderwick chronicles - he was given book 4. We finished that book and went out to library to borrow the others becos we can't wait to find out what happened prior and post.

how do they teach compre?

Personally, if you ds is already very good and in GEP, then perhaps he should just go for creative writing classes because his basics would be strong already. He would not need to attend classes for compre, grammar etc.


Look out for purely creative writing classes for him. TAS has but not many. Or you could join holiday classes that focus on writing. I know many centres have classes that focus just on cw.
