      Hi Tianzhu

Thank you for making the presentation so attractive.

BTW, I notice dd prefers to use the units method to the other two methods.

      Wish you a nice day.
      Hi Leanne and Brenda10

I am happy you liked it.

Brenda10 --- Yes, sometimes, Units Method may be a better alternative to MD for some types of question.
We learned it two years ago from Challenging Maths Made Easy. Yes, my kid simply loved it.

      Best wishes

        Dear bro/ sis,

Can anyone help me with following maths problems? Thanks a million.

😎 Mt. Tan puts up poles from one end of a road to the other at equal distances apart. There are 27 wooden poles. The width of each pole is 10 cm. The distance between 2 poles is 30m. Find the length of the road.

        9) Krishnan had 64 coins in his coin box. There were 20-cent coins and 50-cent coins. The total value of all coins was $18.50. How many 20-cent coins and how many 50 cent coins were there?

        10) Daisy, Lily & Florence share $268. Lily has $20 more than Daisy and Florence has twice as much as Lily. How much money do Daisy & lily have altogether?

        11) Xuxian and Rachel had the same number of marbles. After Rachel gave away 10 marbles and Xuxian gave away 22 marbles, Rachel had 3 times as many marbles as Xuxian. How many marbles did each of them have at first?

        12) Gerry had a total of 30 pens and pencils at first. He then decided to exchange all his pens for pencils. If he exchanged every pen for 2 pencils, he would have 48 pencils. How many pens & pencils did he have at first?

        5) A carton can hold 850cm3 of grape juice. Grace wants to buy 15 such cartons of grape juice. Every 250cm3 of grape juice costs $1. How much does she have to pay altogether?

        6) A sweet cost 15 cents and a packet of 8 similar sweets cost 1. Clement bought exactly 37 sweets. What was the least amount of money that Clement spent on sweets?

Hi hi, can I know which school qns are that as my daughter has the same questions as you too?

          Hi Belle2011

          Good Morning

Here's one way to solve your question if you prefer to use the concept of unchanged total value.

          Hope this helps.

          Best wishes.

            Hello tianzhu,

I was attracted by your colourful presentation on the ratio question about Angel exchanging the $100 notes to $5. I follow your steps but have a question about the method where you make the ending ratio the same. Why do you need to make the ending ratio the same number of units?

            Thank you in advance.

              Hi

In this question, Angel exchanged 12 pieces of $100 into some $5 notes. Hence, 12 pieces of $100 notes or $1200 is changed into 240 pieces of $5 notes. We need to recognise that the total value of notes remains the same for the two scenarios.

The number of units showing the value of notes at first is 36 units. The number of units showing the same value of notes in the end is 9 units. Therefore, we make the total units the same by having a common multiple which is 36.That’s why we need to multiply 9 by 4.

              Hope this helps to clarify.

              Best wishes

Today,u post some beautiful pic of model and that brighten up the pc screen. Thanks

Check with you, ds loves to use model to solve almost every question, if not its ratio method.May I know how do we know the question is not suitable to use model method as it becomes tedious, is there a way to identify it?Also, how to avoid misread in questions for model?Like sometime, to a kid, this I means Ali but it actually mean daniel .thanks

                  Cheers

                      Hi Leanne

                      You’re welcome.

First as a parent, I felt inadequate to answer your questions as my experience is only limited to one kid. An educator would be in a better position to address your issues.

Nevertheless, I’ll attempt to answer your queries basing on my experience in my maths journey with my boy.

We must recognise that MD is one of many heuristics or problem solving strategies in the primary maths syllabus. It’s not the only method. It’s always good to expose kids to a variety of methods and let them select the method they are most comfortable with to solve a particular question.

MD helps kids to \"see\" Maths, but there may be situations where the numbers given in the questions may make it more challenging to use it.

According to this book, Challenging Maths Problems Made Easy, if the questions involve “more than” or “less than” type, MD is more suitable. If the questions involve ratios, fractions and percentages in two cases, the Units Method would be preferred.

I think I’ve mentioned in some earlier posts, my kid preferred to use Units Method (Units and Parts) for questions involving two changed quantities (Please refer to Belle 2011’s question).MD can also be used for such questions, however, UM may be more efficient.

We usually start with some form of simple representation to show the relationships between the before and after scenarios, As my kid got more familiar with the Units Method, he then could have the option of not drawing the diagram and proceeded directly to use the Units Method.

As for carelessness, I think it’s something all students in the world are capable of making. What I did in my boy’s case was to sit down with him and count the number of marks lost due to carelessness in his test papers. Hopefully he would feel “heart pain” and be more careful in future tests.

                      Hope this helps.

                        Dear \"si-fus\",

In a class, 40% of pupils wore glasses. After 5 pupils who wore glasses left the class, the percentage of pupils who wore glasses dropped to 30%. How many pupils in the class did not wear glasses?

                        To help myself:
40% wear glasses ie 2/5 wear glasses.
This means 60% of the pupils do not wear glasses ie 3/5 not wearing glasses.

After 5 pupils who wore glasses left, the % of pupils who wore glasses dropped to 30%. Now my question is this 30% : does this 30% mean
(new number of pupils wearing glasses ) / (new total number of pupils) ???

I know the number of pupils not wearing glasses DID NOT change in this case.

                        I cannnot solve ! 😢

                        Thank-you.

                        Cheers,
                        Belle.
