modelling is a great concept not to be belittled. some complicated problems are easier solved using model methodI am once like you until I read a book about modeling then I realised why is so important to teach the children modeling method is prepare for the math in future and moreover modeling method had won many medal all around the that's why countries wonders about our math education system in Singapore.

I once went Greatmind's seminar, they mentioned about how to solve math problem.
The principle of the center talked about modeling method , said the method is designed for students who cannot understand algebra well. The method can solve problems straightforward, it's easy to implement, but not good to build logic thinking.
During the semina, the principle encouraged students to solve math problem use algebra method instead of modeling method. And he mentioned he has checked with MOE of algebra method validity in exam, the answer is yes.
To be frankly, i felt his point is somewhat resonable. But I don't know how to teach my DD algebra in her age.

It’s interesting. MOE emphasizes so much on models from p3 level but algebra is taught at…what…p5? Isn’t that too close to psle? Maybe kids understand pictorial forms better at their young age (guessing only).
I think my dd and I solved it in the same way but she can’t verbalize it. Her method is the stare and test method. Haha. It’s to divide the difference between 500 and 300 by the difference/ distance between +y and -y which is 2 units. Don’t know if there is such a method but we can get the answer. However if you change the numbers to something not so "neat" and "round", I am not sure if she can still "see" the answer. Haha. Must test her one day. -

the whole process of training the the mind to think in that way, form a mental picture of the problem and the solution, goes a long way to enhance problem solving ability of the kids -
Yes, it’s true. Singapore is very famous in implementation of modeling method. It can help to solve problem in a easy and fast way. Some other country also want to learn about it.
But finally all students will go for algebra method when they go for secondary education. So I’m wondering if children can accept algebra, why not go for that directly. -
Oh, I see. Thanks for sharing about the algebra. I also didn't know that understanding models can be useful outside math. As a parent, I could only see models as a way to solve math problems! So blur.

My dd woke me up early on Sat morning to teach her Math and my blood pressure went up a few notches teaching her… me not the patient type lol…
Btw she said she knows how to do the question but doesnt know how to draw models. Is it okie for her to use other methods (eg arrow methods she learnt in P1/P2) to solve during exams instead of drawing models?
