All About Speech Therapy

I’m watching this topic closely because my 20-month old ds2 is still not talking. He only says a few words like ma-ma, da-da, yay, eh, oh, um.

Getting quite worried because by this age, my two older kids were already talking very well.

However, he understands very well what we are saying and can follow instructions. Also no drooling and can eat different types of food very well.

24-hr mum, at what age did your #3 start talking, without therapy?

my rate was 4 yrs ago. at that time, $100 an hr for therapy. i know they had increased to 120 two yrs ago. now i duno. for assessmment it was $180 one time.


my #3 can talk in sentences ard 2 or 2 plus, cant really remember. but she speaks much better than #1 cos my maid talks to her a lot
my #1 speak in sentences ard 2.5 yrs old.

20mth too young, can still wait. but try to talk to the child more.
if by 2.5yr still cant really talk, can go for assessment, my # 2 (boy) also cant really speak in sentences when he was 2 yr 9 mth.
by 3 they shd be speaking well for most kids.

got to find out at 2, why cant talk? due to lack of stimulation becos no one reads to him, talk to him, or becos of some inherent problem. or maybe no interaction at hm?[/quote]My bro is living with his in-laws (a big family). Shld not be no stimulation. The child understands what the adults tell him, he just wld not respond via speech.

it has programes for normal as well as special kids to tackle brain functions in terms of visual-motor coordination, auditory (ie listening skills), concentration etc. its basically like a brain gym centre.

my boy attended the revamp programme (renamed as smart moves and smart vision) when he was exactly 4, as i noticed he cant really write - his letters will flow all over, cant stay on the line, and of cos cant write within the constraints in a triple line bk for penmanship. some pple may think its normal but my #1 （girl） and my #3 （girl， now 3.5yrs - can write better than him and no problem writing ON the line. besides, when reading, he tends to mis the line or word, cant really read FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, he tends to be a bit random in picking out the words unless u point the word for him. he had a lot of mirror image that time in his writing for letters eg j, f, g, e, and numbers too i think. he also cant really balance well when climbing up the bridge, rather clumsy.

when he writes, his wrist was curved, arms above the paper instead of resting on it, and writes really slowly and hates writing.

i went to dynamics at orchard for assessment, the angmoh said he's ok but i didnt believe her. so i research n found brainfit studio at goldhil centre. they did assessment on him and found his most lacking in visual-motor coordination (eg if u throw ball at him, he cant really catch). so i went for 2 mths of the revamp prog, where he did jumping on trampoline and reading words off the wall chart, lying on a giant gym ball to play puzzle, simple written ex eg pick out all letter A from a list to improve eye tracking etc. also got to do those gym ex as homework at home. 3 times a week.. really siong. but his writing improved tremendously at the end of it and i continued for another 2 mths. they did pre and post prog test to show u the results. very transparent type.

i also sent my boy last year for fastforward - a listening programme cos he also cant pick up instructions well if too complex.

now my boy not only writes normally and can even draw his cars and trains very well.

i plan to send him for smart focus to improve attention span cos he's very hyper.

can pay by bb bonus. ex but its like therapy rate. better do now than realise the prob after he goes p1.

he has a history of speech delay so i believe other brains not working too well too hahahaha.. till today he is a mystery to me....nvr follow rules, thnk too much out of the box and just unteachable. sigh...very maverick

i have 3 kids so i can compare. basically if a child exhibits some delays or problems at a very young age, normally they dont outgrow (much). got to do something to rectify, not to make him or her a genius, but just to be no par and a normal child like his friends…

The child understands what the adults tell him, he just wld not respond via speech.[/quote]is the child shy? usually shdnt be shy to own family members. got to chk if got speech problems. 2 yrs old may be a bit young tho i know some at 2 are very chatty already. can give a couple of mths up to 2.5yrs old to monitor. i rem my #1 only started talking at 2.5yrs. #2 was late but as it its, he had speech delay

assessment is 380 for a 2hr assessment. if sign up, then the 380 can be included inside the course fee, ie free assessment. if didnt sign up after the evaluation, then pay the 380


i cant rem the exact course fees but its worked out abt 70-100 an hr depending on the package and they also increased the fee later cos mine was 2 yrs ago. it was sthing like 2400 for 20 sessions or so, 4800 for 60 sessions, . my boy was rather slow so it was money that i cant save and lucky got bb bonus. i know if u sign up for more sessions at 1 go, the per session rate is lower

Its a lot of money, 24hr-mum, and the things we will do for our kids! Last year I paid SGD2,000 per month for the private early intervention centre daily 3 hours for my boy. Went for 9 months. This year, he is attending kindergarten but I continue to put him for 1 hour sessions 3 times per week at SGD100 each time. Mainly so that my 3+ yo son will receive personal attention to do reading, learn phonics, do other fine motor skill activities etc.. He has speech delay and just beginning to speak so yes, we are still watching over him and having this additional support outside school hours is important! Yup, all budget and time go into this liao, so no further enrichments for him!
