And these girls although they may not be academically strong but they are gifted in certain way and MOE says that they will inform the school on the strength of the girls who has clear the first round of GEP test as to whether they are strong in english/maths/general ability

I'm not sure how the school select the top 80 but the only component I can think of is based on the SA2 results (of P3/4/5). Add the total marks of the 4 subjects, do a sort and cutoff at 80.

Good guess! The school should be sending the p3 parents a letter about this. Unless the rules change, I remember it to be the top 80 mainstream girls based on their sa1(30%) + sa2(70%) score from English, Math and Science in p3. Should be the same for p4 going into p5.

Frankly, I think it is harder getting into p5e/f than p4e/f because they take the \"top 80\" after some girls move into gep, without taking into account those transferring into the schools at p4 for the following year. These girls transferring in are sure to include bright girls and some of them would make it to e/f in p5.[/quote]Strong agree with it. A number of girls who passed the first round of GEP selection were tranferred and distributed to the mainstream classes. They have the higher chances to get into P5e/f.

I believe the distribution to the top mainstream P4 classes (outside of GEP class) would also be influenced by the GEP screening result of the second round, esp those who did not get pass the second round, or just missed being selected by the skin of their teeth.


The MOE officially call them the HAL (High Ability Learners) with some special programme for them as well. Parents can google for it under MOE website on the GEP section

to get into 4 e/f have to compete with incoming p4, those passed one round but failed 2nd round of gep test and there are only 80 vacancy…so the kids in e and f are really the creme de la creme…

Moonee, what level were you talking about?

And anyway, all classes from A to J are mainstream classes. As are E and F. So there's no transfer to mainstream class to speak of?

Depends on the school. Some schools just distribute P4 streaming based purely on results of school exams, disregarding GEP results. Friends' daughters (in another school) who got into final round of GEP (but didn't make it to GEP) were sent to second bottom class and average class in P4.

Not sure how it works in RGPS though.

My DD brouht back a form to registrate for UNSW international competitions. It seems only English is available for P3 students to choose.


My DD took UNSW competions of math and english last year. I felt the system is very good to fully assess the developing level of kids. I will let my DD to go for it again, no matter what grade she can achieve, just want to assess her level, hope can see some improvement.

Rgps disregards the gep results, ie they look at p3 results only and no
consideration is given to the fact that the student made it past first round of gep. I confirmed this with a teacher. Also, one student we know who made it through the first round is not in 4e/f. However, above is for legacy rgps students only. I don't know how students transferred in at p4 are assigned classes.

Just to share an interesting point, in my dd's class, more than half made it through first round gep!
