Hi,

Know I'm a bit kancheong with this question. Just to check, did the school communicate about the changes to the new MTL testing and teaching? How the parents are able to help the kids? Thanks
      hi sahm_tan,

Not sure how to answer your question, but the school did provide us with a list of what's going to be assessed under the holistic assessment and it seemed fairly clear.

On the operational level for MTL, so far DS1 has had to read out pages from the textbook to us; he brings back one chinese storybook each week. Recently, there is a show and tell (5 sentences) about either a toy or a photo. This show & tell forms part of the assessment. Finally, the usual spelling and stuff (btw, if it wasn't mentioned, P1 spelling thus far is ALL in hypy).

DS1 also brings home weekly a chinese magazine (ζ–°ζœ‹ε‹) - his is for P1 & P2. His teacher usually gets them to do the P1 questions in class also, but I don't think it's marked.
11 Mar (Fri), Teacher Meet Parents - No formal classes for the day?

Ya.. i think so. The letter indicated to BRING OUR KID to school on the timing allocate to us mah.

And I recall also that our kids have to be in school uniform...kids don't come in party best. πŸ˜‰ A bit curious why the child will join the PTM, I thought parents/teachers can be more open if the child is not there?
Hmm... in the way is good to let the kid join in also. So they would know what we are discussing about them. What the teacher and we parents hoping or expect them to do. Rather than go home then start our nagging....... scolding....... preaching.....

Tingxie is part of their assessment (small bit though) and is conducted regularly. What's missing is the big exams twice a year. For P2, they only have that exam at year end (no mid-year exam - or whatever they term it these days).

After all this time, I think I will reserve my opinion only after I have attended it. Will keep you in touch what went on?

DS1 was sharing with me about his erhu classes (the additional music element that all kids have to undergo - either erhu or guzheng). He seems to be enjoying himself in the class...so rare! Ask him to practise piano is like dragging a cat to bath. πŸ˜› Am glad that he get exposure to chinese instruments in school - and without having to join the chinese orchestra.

I think there is but it's fairly low and probably paid out of Edusave. Thus far, I have not coughed up money (except for the numerous magazines); I recall faintly there were some forms to complete to authorise the withdrawals.

I was under the impression that under the reviewed enhanced MTL teaching and testing methods, there will be no ting xie. There was this MTL Review Committee and they released their recommendations in Jan. Maybe it will be implemented by stages or I misunderstood.
