And I am not sure about how schools teach but I Strongly encourage parents to prepare the kids in K2 for this hanyu pinyin drilling session in P1. If not sure faint....

But if you look at the exercises my girl is doing in school, the kids are expected to be able to 认字. They have to be able to identify the hanyu pinyin with the right 汉字.

Just wondering what titles/publishers you get for P1/2 Chinese. Maybe we can share useful titles instead of having to stand for hours at Popular combing through the shelves of books.

Cool... the kids need to write hanyu pinyin with the tone thingy too? A bit challenging to teach that to K2 kid... cos' my kid does it as phonics... and they only do 汉字 in K2... and chinese library books are 汉字 of cos.

I have problems teaching daughter hanyu pinyin spelling every week.
P1 textbooks do have chinese characters...at the end of every chapter, there is a box which has the characters + hanyu pinyin which the child has to know...something called either 识认字.

I agree with what Callie mentioned above. They have to be able to identify the hanyu pinyin with the right character even if they don't know how to write.
What do you expect from MOE ? The Education Minister doesn't have education background but a doctor. What does he know about education ?
Take my son in P5 as example...he is not even doing Higher Chinese now but his textbook is so difficult :x

The teacher started to introduce hanyu pinyin in week 5, Term 1 :shock: I was like,:Huh, so fast?\" So when I checked with the teacher, she told me that learning hanyu pinyin is v challenging for a K2 kid especially when they just managed how to write Chinese Character words. So she is introducing them slowly so that the kids will not be scare off ....So, guess I have to start learning the \"a,o,i,e,u\" & the 声调 all over again lioa :lol:

Its good to start learning hanyu pinyin in K2. My p1 just told me that teacher had a poll on her class to see how many students learn HYPY in the kindergarten. Only my girl and another student didnt. But i sent my girl to berries then & she learnt the HYPY there. So far so good :xedfingers: But i heard that her other classmate has a problem catching up though.

I also have a problem in placing the 声调. But i realised most of the time (not all the time) that the 声调 is on a,e,i,o,u, whichever come 1st. Eg. yue, put on top of \"e\" coz \"e\" come 1st. There are only a few it doesnt work. Like cow, niu... its on top of \"u\". You can try it out..
