        ZacK:
        Few issues to follow-up:

        - Gotta check if the maid insurance covers such accidents;
        - If our helper is given MC for 5 days, how do we handle this? Do we have to give her mandatory rest or just light duties?
        - The issue of compensation and what is our liability would be an area of concern as well.

        Thanks.
Bro, Sad to hear about the news. Anyway, with regards to your querries:

You really have to look at the fine prints & clauses in the maid's insurance
to understand what is the coverage. Most maid's insurance are the basic
package which only covers accidental injuries \"sustained in the course of
their duty\"... Only then will the maid be able to seek insurance claims or
be liable for workman compensation.. In your scenario, if the injury
sustained is purely accidental and not work related.. hence I do not think
it is covered. (P/S; Again I may be wrong as it depends on what is stated
on the contracts..I have to see it to be sure).

As for the issue of MC... If your maid is given 5 Days MC, technically, she
has the rights NOT to do any work for the 5 days and still get paid...Even
if she is willing to carry on working during her MC , I do not think that you
would want to take the risk of her sustaining any other injuries during this
period as it could be really messy...eg: in the event she makes an
allegation that you \"forced\" her to work.. (Touch Wood).. or sustain any
other injury while working during MC (Double Touch Wood).. You can get
into deep trouble Bro... I suggest you allow her to rest and take her
medication till her follow up treatment. Thereafter you may seek
verification from the doctor to see whether she is fit to carry out her
normal duties or to be placed on light duty.

Last but not least, the issue of compensation... As long as the injuries
were not inflicted on purpose... You should not worry too much about the
compensation. If it not covered in the insurance, then it is an issue of
\"who\" or \"what\" is at fault. In your scenario, I assume that the pole which
fell on her face was \"self\" constructed. In this case, if the maid wants to
seek compensation, she can do so via civil means.. ie: The house owner
would be liable to make compensation for the injury & scarring.. however
if she does not want to initiate any civil proceedings, Out of good will, you
may still want to offer her a token sum for what happened if she is
agreable to accept it. (P/S: Pls have this agreement between you and the
maid documented to avoid any allegations)

You can PM me if you need further clarifications Bro.. Dont worry. No Charges!! :celebrate:

I have yet to reach MOE, their phone is always very long queue. I wanted to know how soon I can renew the work permit. I know that in order to renew the work permit, I must have the Maid Insurance to renew as well. Check with the Insurance, they say can only renew 1 mth prior the insurance due date which is Nov 2009. I find that the whole things not matched leh..... Was told that the very basic package for insurance is around $180 per year. Is it true?

If you have SingPass, can do everything online, fast & save time. Can find out info you need on MOM FAQ too.

          http://mom.gov.sg/publish/momportal/en/communities/work_pass/foreign_domestic_workers/e-services_and_forms/WP_Online_for_Employers_of_Foreign_Domestic_Workers.html

I employed 2 transfer maids via WPOL (transfered from employer direct thru online forum), as for insurance just call your regular financial adviser to do it or NTUC Income online.

            [email protected]:

            Hi Tamarind,

Would like to seek your opinion whether should I grant my maids with 2 weeks home leave.

She has been working for me approx. 1 year only. She approach me to request for 2 weeks home leave coming Oct 09, claiming that her daughter birthday & she promise her to go home & celebrate for her.

I have checked with my maid agency, but they advice me not to let her go back since she just work for me about 1 year, cause they encounter many cases that maid went back home town & promise to return after their leave, but at the end did not return back.

I did told my maid that if she wants to go home, she will have to bear for her air ticket since my contract with her end only next year.

How do you think, should I let her home & some peoples tell me that if allow her go home, must hold some of her money?

Is she a good maid ? If she is a very good maid, and she seems very sincere about her request, then you may want to consider to letting her home, provided she pays for her own air ticket. She will not be paid for the days she is gone, and you can tell her that you will pay her the current month salary only when she returns. But bear in mind that what she says about her girl's birthday may not be true, maids can tell lies about anything.

But if her performance is average only, then I don't think you should let her go. She may think that you are very easy going and ask to go home every few months. What the agency said is true, the maid may not return.

            Hi Tamarind,

My maid decided to go home for vacation during December for 2 weeks. But she give excuse that she need to bring back some money for certain reason but i told her that the money can only give her after her return in S'pore. But my Dd told her that we will let her go back & no choice hv to cancel her workpermit as we foreseen that she may not come back. At the end she decided to work until Dec & go back to Philippines. But my concern now is:
            1) Should i cancel her workpermit now instead of wait till Dec as I worried she might not hv the mood to work having know that she will go home by Dec?
            2) If she work less than 1 year (22/7/09), will I be getting free replacement from my agency?
            3) My dd said will get the new maid coming before her leaving, let her train the new maid for 1 week, does it necessary?

Thanks buds hubs for your response. I will need to look at the terms of the contract, didnt think too much into it when we got the Insurance Bond and had the Personal Accident as add-on, gotta check whether if it has other add-ons like hospital and surgical etc.

Got your note on workmen compensation which does not cover outside of work hours... Asked my wife to take the insurance contract out and will study it in greater detail. Anyway the medical bill was <$100 which we do not mind footing for her.

We have no issue for her to take a break, however I think she does not feel comfortable not doing anything as well. In fact we had to assure her especially after A&E not to worry about the housework.

We gave her light duty, just assist to attend to DS2, heavy housework put on hold for the time being.

I hope we wont have to come to this stage... In fact I explained the accident to DS1 and he on his own accord decided to draw something for our helper to console her. I think she was touched by our gestures... We are thinking of getting for her the anti-scarring cream which my wife used after her C-section.

The gash is at her eyebrow and runs downwards \")\" towards her eye... She'll be having her stitches removed on Thur and we're thinking of getting her the cream that my wife used when she had her C-section to prevent scarring and keloids... Hopefully it is suitable for her in her case. šŸ™

                    No problem.

My son recently also had a bad cut above his eye brown, and we have to rope in plastic surgeon .Its a vertical cut and the postion is not ideal. He still has this plaster on.

Maybe your maid should avoid egg, blacksauce and seafood for at least a month.

Someone also recommend me duoderm cream which is for scaring but I did not use it and choose this silicon sticker from switerland instead.

Right, hope she has a speedy recovery.

I was told that my maid had a plastic surgeon do the stitches for her, thus the longer overall waiting time as they had to call the plastic surgeon to the A&E.

Noted on the advice on eggs, blacksauce and seafood which is consistent with what we told her to avoid... Only thing is we told our maid to eat more fish during this period of time and avoid chicken but she insisted that back home, they avoid fish totally and eat chicken instead during such healing process... So we were dumbfounded :?

We were thinking if she meant avoid river fishes as that could be the main source of their fish staple for them. Understand that river fishes are not recommended but deep sea fishes are alright for recovery from wounds and scars.

From what I know, for fresh wounds (before the skin/flesh fuse), avoid fish until a week later.

Because fish helps our body to grow flesh, hence over growth of tissue which cause keloid?? That's what I was told after C-section - my mum and MIL's theory, guess that makes sense?
