All About Preparing For PSLE

I'm riding on your experience on what to expect when son goes to P6 next year. Like what Tinkerbelle mentioned, it's a whole new learning experience everyday...and I don't know if I'm coaching my son is on right or wrong track. Really have to keep closer eye.

With just one paycheque, it's not possible to have tuition in all 4 subjects. Going to primary school now is like having an operation in OT (TOUCHWOOD)...you need a team of specialists.

My p6 is not having tuition bc he hates it. He does have 1 math, altho' I wonder if it's helping or not. It's not his worst subject, but I think as a subject, it's the most tolerable tuition for this boy to have. And no homework - which is his style. Anyway, I'm in a way glad he refused to have other tuition, bc with his heavier schedule this year, he doesn't have that much time, plus school homework, etc.

I wonder too. Boils down to sheer determination, ability and the want to succeed. I think it's still do-able at PSLE without a team, but secondary school is tough.

Secondary school? They are on their own - make it or break it. They have to learn to handle. Can't have much tuition either bc no time in secondary school.

Yes, secondary school is tough. All the more so because there's absolutely no time for tuition or even homework sometimes. So different from our time.

With all the recent changes to the Singapore's education system, it's sometimes really hard to keep up, even for the ones who have \"Been there, Done that\". I have another DD in P2 and it's evident that DD2's P2 syllabus is very different to DD1's P2 syllabus 4 years ago. It's a whole new learning experience every day.

Aye, I've already had 2 older ones gone thru' psle already but each child is so different. Didn't really do all that much \"studying\" with the older kids nor monitor their studies. But this one need to keep close eye.

Yes....each child is different. DH and I always wonder how our DDs can be as different as chalk & cheese...keke. We always tell ourselves not to compare them and do what is best for each child. Guess as parents, we know our kids well and know who is an independent learner and who needs closer monitoring. You were lucky that your 2 elder ones don't need close monitoring. :lol:

The standards have been raised to a point that I cannot NOT keep a close eye. I believe kids should be left to study on their own. Same like with your older ones, The Daughter had no tuition and little help from me... can still make it into top school. Little Boy faces challenges that The Daughter never had to face. I think we can still do it but he certainly cannot cope without help.

I wonder how kids with no enrichment and uneducated parents cope though. It no longer is a level playing field because it has come to a point where to succeed at PSLE, you need a TEAM and not just a child.[/quote]Indeed the standards of education has been raised. Even though DD1 is an independent learner, I can't help but monitor her progress closely. Just want to show some moral support for DD1. And yes, having \"First-Time PSLE\" jitters. :nailbite: so must monitor to keep abreast with the latest changes in the education system. :lol:

chenonceau, :salute: your DD for not requiring enrichment lessons and yet got admitted into a top sch. Did she just get her 'A' levels results or is she sitting for hers this year? All the best!! :celebrate:

Janet, I also have moments like this...Asking myself, \"Am I teaching DD1 the right stuff\"? Don't want to confuse her further, especially for maths. Wanted to send her for maths enrichment but she's not keen as her schedule is quite packed as it is. With her maths getting harder, I believe this will be the last year I can guide her. As Jtoh mentioned, sec sch is very tough, so I seriously must consider \"retiring\" from coaching DD1 maths.... :siam:

You don't need to coach her for A-levels, certainly? Esp as she's a top school.
