P1 Chinese - General Discussion

Yong HL:
Its good to start learning hanyu pinyin in K2. My p1 just told me that teacher had a poll on her class to see how many students learn HYPY in the kindergarten. Only my girl and another student didnt. But i sent my girl to berries then & she learnt the HYPY there. So far so good :xedfingers: But i heard that her other classmate has a problem catching up though.Champion:
So when I checked with the teacher, she told me that learning hanyu pinyin is v challenging for a K2 kid especially when they just managed how to write Chinese Character words. So she is introducing them slowly so that the kids will not be scare off
....So, guess I have to start learning the \"a,o,i,e,u\" & the 声调 all over again lioa :lol:janet_lee88:
I also have a problem in placing the 声调. But i realised most of the time (not all the time) that the 声调 is on a,e,i,o,u, whichever come 1st. Eg. yue, put on top of \"e\" coz \"e\" come 1st. There are only a few it doesnt work. Like cow, niu... its on top of \"u\". You can try it out..[This old dog here is having problems learning where to place the 声调..place the intonation on which alphabet...instead of cracking my head over it, I ask my son. Daughter's K2 听写 was nightmare. Well, it's easier in P1 in the sense that she doesn't have to write the chinese characters.
汉语拼音声调标注位置口诀:
(1)有a不放过;
(2)没a找o、e;
(3)i、u并列标在后;
(4)单个韵母不必说
1) a母出现不放过, (即韵母中凡是有a的,标在a上。如lao,标在a上)
2) 没有a母找 o e , (没有a,但有o 或e的,标在 o 或e 上。

喜欢你们早上──第一个字读作半三声;
:udawoman: :thankyou: for sharing with us the rules of HYPY. Very useful indeed. -
Term 1 rather relaxed.
Term 2 onwards, there will be listening comprehension.
*听写音节
*看图写拼音
*完成句子看图造句
*数笔画
*Joining character radical -
Yeah, term 1 is still not so difficult. But term 2 onwards is more to learn…
I wonder in this forum we can share our children ‘chinese creative writing’ (作文). -

For lower primary, I feel it's more crucial to read more and 认字. For Term 2, my daughter will have that 看图造句...choose correct sentence based on picture. This will definitely require her to know how to read.Yeah, term 1 is still not so difficult. But term 2 onwards is more to learn...
I wonder in this forum we can share our children 'chinese creative writing' (作文). I have been asking my DS1 (in P1) to do 1 作文 every week, a simple one with a few sentences only, and he can check dictionary when he doesn't know how to write a particular character. I just want him to practice so when he goes to P3 he will be familiar to do that.
But the thing is although I can speak chinese, sometimes the way I speak is 乱七八糟.. is not a proper way. I just wonder whether it is a good idea if we ask our children do simple 作文, then we scan and upload here.. we read it together and give some comments on how to improve or praise on the phrases they used... After that let the child know that many aunties / uncles also read his/her 作文, so the child will become more motivated to practise the 作文... -
Hi allseasons,
For both my kids, my son learnt hanyu pinyin much faster than daughter at P1...very surprising for a boy. My gal at P1 this year is having a problem with this. Usually kids will have difficulties with 2nd and 3rd tone, but mine has problem with all 4
This week and next, I will have to revise everything taught from Day 1. -

Wow you are very hardworking! I have not gotten my girl to do any chinese compo at all... but it is good to start early slowly...Yeah, term 1 is still not so difficult. But term 2 onwards is more to learn...

If you need some comments etc... I can try to help. My chinese can make it lah, has been my best subject throughout and i did higher chinese in NUS... just a bit rusty after so many years but think P1 standard I should have no problem. But I must say that it might be a good idea to post the compo for us to read... -
My girl apparently is enjoying hanyu pinyin. Recently, she is using it quite often in day-to-day activites. For eg, i brought her to Bishan park for blading lessons and she started saying the hanyu pinyin for 公园 and which tones… when she fell down she also said "die1, die2, die3, die4, dao1,dao2,dao3, dao4… die1 dao3". So funny!!!
Maybe we can do this with our kids for them to learn as they play. -

Wow!! That sure sounds like a fun way to learn chinese. That way, your DD will pick up lots of good vocab as well. Will come in handy for her oral exams eventually. :lol:
