children are not brand conscious , only parents are brand conscious. if a child is brand conscious , it is becos the parent impart the wrong value to themI'm currently in a dilemna whether to send my DD to an elite or neighborhood primary school. After reading the postings here, I think I may seriously consider the neighborhood school cos I believe an elite school has more snobbish kids than the neighborhood one, and I dont want my child to get influenced and become snobbish or brand conscious.
On the other hand, if I send her to a neighborhood school instead of an elite school, will she blame me in future for not giving her a chance at a top elite school?? Hiaz...headache! :slapshead:
if you are a ex-student from the elite school and you choose a neighbourhood school for your dd. your grandchildren will have less chance to get into the elite school. -

Elite schools don't matter in primary. Schools with long history might have dinosaurs in management. Elite schools only matter in secondary. In such cases, hereditary relationships don't matter.

My DD keeps asking when during her primary school time \"Mummy! why didn't you join Nanyany, SCGS, RGS since you were telling me that you got your first choice base on your PSLE result? I told her....your Grandma nv told me there were such “Elite schools” during my time....... -

Hi Angelight,
Does it mean either you or your hubs were from elite school hence you got the priority to get in? Or was it within 1 km of your house hence you are confident to get in?
Because so-called elite school is not easy to get in hence just curious.

Hi Chenonceau,
I agree with you that not ALL kids from elite schools are snobbish. My DH came from elite schools from primary to university, but he is humble, simple (doesn't hanker after branded stuff or the material things in life like fast cars or expensive holidays).
And I also agree that the parents' teaching of values is important in making sure the kids are grounded. But sometimes peer pressure can be very strong too. But I have faith in my child, that she is not the easily influenced type.
Btw, what do you mean when you say \"elite schools dont matter in primary, only secondary\"? If that is the case, why are all the parents so kiasu and kan cheong when it comes to primary school registration? :? -
Hi Desertwind!
I'm not from an elite primary school, but I studied very hard to get into a good sec school and one of the top JCs. But that will not help get my DD into a top elite school unless we move house cos we are not staying within 1km either. Hence my dilemna, whether it's worth it to uproot our residence just to get DD into the elite school.DesertWind:

Secondary elite schools collect students with the best abilities. These students compete with each other and help each other to be better. These students build lifelong friendships that will help them in later life. It helps to be friends since teenage with people who are CEOs of this and that... or Perm Sec this or that. Schools are also able to provide high quality accelerated talent development programs when they have collected enough of a critical mass of high ability students. RI/RGS both have math acceleration class, humanities acceleration class etc... There are enough students to warrant the creation of such a class.

A neighbourhood secondary school may have maybe 3 students gifted in math... how to create a class?
Most parents go for brand name primary schools without looking at school management. There are at least TWO brand name primary schools that are AWFUL because they had dinosaurs in management. People who didn't even carry handphones. This sort of management damages teacher's morale, and when teachers are unhappy, your child will be poorly educated.
In primary school, the important thing is school management. And that changes. So... to choose a good school, talk to the teachers... walk through the school... get a feel of the Principal's values. How long has he/she been there? Evaluate the facilities, the pedagogy, the school's initiatives, the school's PSLE results, look for happy teachers who love kids. These are real markers of a quality education. NOT fame and branding.
Certainly, some branded primary schools are really good on all the criteria above... but not all are. So look at the fundamentals, not at the name. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
