      Hi mummy always & LJHLJH,

I am glad both of you \"found\" each other. I read both your postings before and actually I got confused thought both of you were the same person since the problems sound similar!

      All the best!

        mummy always:
Tks Ljhljh. I know what you mean. I feel worst when I wonder if I did anything wrong... Do share how ur boy does. We will celebrate every success! 😄

Have you come across the book \"Come into my world\" by Brenda Tan? The book carries testimonies of families going though tough times with their special need kids and even some written by the subjects (special need kids themselves). It is very encouraging and uplifting. The book is available in public libraries.

wow! this must be a sign (a good sign), it's the book that my hubby just bought and is reading it. I've yet to start on it and will wait till he's done 🙂

actually, I'm not so much upset that my boy has a learning difficulty than I am frustrated abt not knowing exactly what he issue had and how to help him. Like mummy always, I went through the 'it isn't autism, and it isn't ADHD...etc' and schools like Pathlight will not accept him becoz he is not autistic. So he falls into the gaps of those 'borderline learning difficulty' kids and has to make do with mainstream school, yet he is not same as these mainstream kids. Well, am meeting up with a school principal next week to discuss what learning support is there in this primary school and see how he can be supported in every way in mainstream school.

hello, thanks so much for everyone’s contributions. i am new to ksp, and it is great knowing others who are having the same issues as my son.

my theory is that singapore wants to push every child to his/her fullest potential and if this means forcing a borderline child to cope with mainstream school and emerge at least with minimum passes in psle/o/n level and if he also manages to scrapes through to ite/poly, if not university, it will do that.

meanwhile parents like LJHLJH and myself just have to put in the extra effort to push our child without causing them to become discouraged and feel inadequate. hopefully they will meet the grade and get through…

hey, LJHLJH - does your child also struggle with reading and writing? I think the fact that he is slow in reading (and i don’t know what else he is hearing from his teachers and friends), discourages him from trying. He just told me that he cannot read because he is "so small".

i realise i didn’t reply your question about assessment - yes, i am sending him for assessment - appointment in may.

                Hi Mummy Always

Just login and was searching for discussion threads related child developmental issues.

This is because i have a girl who is 6 this year. She was also diagnosed with speech related difficulty. Similar to your son, she had difficulty expressing her thoughts and could not different between yesterday, today and tomorrow. She also had difficulty expressing herself eg. talking about her zoo outing. We had a referral with KKH CDU and also seeked private speech therapy. Situation had improved for her, but we noticed it is still lacking compare to her peers(not that i want to compare, but this is a fact that i have to admit that she is slow). She will also be sitting for the School Readiness assessment this Jun.
Had also decided to put aside my career, going into part time so that i can devote more time to her.
If possible, after kkh appt., perhaps you should engage private service to supplement KKH’s follow up.

Anyway, does any know about ACT3 international and is their program as good as it sound? Because i am contemplating to send my girl to their class.

                Thanks!

                  hi mama_mia

thks for sharing. i am still hoping that my son will learn sufficiently so he can manage sufficiently well when he is older. much of his communication could be rote learning, and not as effortless as many children, but i hope that high exposure will at least give him sufficient "data bank" to manage as well as a normal child. will see how…

                    Hi mummyalways and LJHLJH

I don’t have any experience with this personally but just like to share the story of the son of a very close friend of mine. He started speaking very late and couldn’t speak clearly even at K1. He is also not very conscious of his surroundings eg he would eat from another’s person’s plate etc. He went for a couple of months of speech therapy before going to P1. He needed a lot of attention but somehow managed with help from the parents and older sister. They focused on his school work, eschewing other activities like music which his sister excelled in. He somehow felt inferior because his sister was doing very well academically, always coming home with medals, prizes and all sorts of award and was also a school prefect. But it helped a lot that the sister (who’s not much older) was loving, supportive and very encouraging towards him.

At the end of P6, he managed to do very well for his PSLE despite him still not being able to speak well. In fact, his score was only 5 points less than his sister. He is now in Sec 3 in a very good boys school and is a prefect, doing very well in the Maths and Sciences.

Just hope this will encourage you. They may be a little slow at the beginning, but they can still make it.

But for mummyalways, if your son is also very small for his age, it can be a case of stunted growth. You may want to have him tested for thyroid problems which is a common cause of stunted growth in children and can be dangerous if left untreated. You can look at therapy and other intervention after you’ve ruled this out.
