        I really need help !!!

My son is 5 yr old and he was arrange to be in the TCS ... And he had attend 6 lesson and when I ask him what he learn , he show me his work book . He say teacher only teach him this work book page n read story to the class !! And the work book page is coloring !!! That's what he do in pre nursery . Last week I can't stand any more , I went to ask the teacher . What is she teaching . She say in order to go to next level of the class , they need to know the sound for the 26 letter. And she say she will teach in the lesson n say won't be so fast can promote , need to take time . I was thinking , my son is 5 years n we have been speaking English all along , and if TCS is only teAching sounds of the 26 letters in phonic , I think my son watch DVD will also learn ... When hubby know that , he ask me to stop my boy in ICR .... Can any one pls help ? Is the teacher teaching nothing or TCS is like thAt ??? Pls help
        Hi joajoa,

        I hope I can help you out....okay.

From what I know is that when comes to teaching languages, ones really need to be patient. Speaking from the experience of teaching 4 boys on phonics all on my own, actually the child must know the phonics sounds (not just ABC), digraphs and other basic phonics rules as well. In this case, the child may not learn this from the DVD because it is a passive learning and not interactive involving 5 senses.

Although none of my children attend the ICR but I have all their books. From the book itself, one must really know the phonics rules before can embarking into blends and hence reading. Hopefully this helps. This will aid in the teacher in teaching the child how to blend.

I have seen children knows all the phonics sounds but that does not necessarily mean they know how to blend the sounds into words (the ability to determine what is the ist, middle and last sounds of a word). Also the child may not be able to deduce what are the different sounds from a pronounced words. So in this aspect, the child needs to go back and reinforce the phonics sounds althogether.

We need to be realistic.....the learning pace will be much slower if a child goes to the center once a week as compared to learning everyday at home. πŸ˜‰

          Hi joajoa,
my DD started wif PRP so IM not too sure abt their TCS curriculum. In PRP, their build up a v gd foundation for the different sounds. Like wat laughingcat mentions, they muz b able to differentiate bet e 1st, middle and last sounds in order to do blending at the ICR stage. Aft PRP, my DD was very particular abt her pronounciation. Same goes for my colleague's DS who went thru PRP as well.

If u r worried abt the slow pace, u may wish to address your concerns wif the class teacher agn. Mayb u wish to chk wif her the progress of your DS's learning & oso in order to get promoted, wat r e criteria she's looking at. Good luck. πŸ˜‰

Relax....Take time to see the result of phonic class.

My boy started at the age of 4 and he refused to open his mouth at the begin stage. His teacher feedbacked to me that the progress for him compared to other kids may be slow. I did not give up and waited for 3 months which he finally open his mouth to read. From there, he moved up very fast and completed the whole course of phonic before P1. He can read on his own without my help and especially big word by himself.Beside reading, he had no problem in his spelling too.

I do encourage you not to give up...Give some time to your teacher and kid. Phonic really help your kid alot when he starts Primary school especially in reading and spelling.

                  Hi Joajoa,

You really need to be patient. It is important to set the foundation right, instead of jumping straight to blending. Because if you don't get it right, the child will suffer in the end.

Looking at ICR books, it is a not a surprise when a teacher's assessment of a child is not \"ready\" in some aspect. I am not sure whether have you seen the books before......Coz from the books, there are some symbols at the top of the words indicating long or short sounds etc. So if you are considering ICR, I suggest that you really stick to the foundation.

In my own view after teaching 4 boys.....personally if a center said that a child can start to blend even though knows the basic ABC phonics sounds....then that particular center is really not setting the right foundation. I hope this help.

                    Hi,

I am totally agreed with laughingcat. From my experience, my boy did attend the phonics class and he actually completed the basic and intermediate. When I sent him for the ICR, he is actually initially in PRP class and it takes him around 3 months plus to promote to ICR class. Initially, I am also quite anxious but in the end, I think it is worth the wait. For my gal, she take at least 6 months to promote from TCS to PRP, I can understand your anxiety as she is also shy and refused to open her mouth initially. So slowly, she is improving at her own pace. Sometimes, we as a parents are anxious because we spend that amount of fees, of course we want to see some result immediately. But in the end, it also depends on how fast the kids can pick up as I must agree that this is the foundation that we cannot push them too much.

                      Hi joajoa,
I can't agree more wif laughing cat. I oso think that having a strong foundation is v imp. My DD oso started with Zoophonics and had learnt the first sounds but when she was assessed at ICR, they think she's not ready for blending so was put in PRP first. Her progress was oso slow in the beginning. But aft 4-5 mths, I can c her improvement & interest in the Eng language.

Not sure if you wan to gif it another shot.
