beanstalk:
Does the school have exams in P1 and P2 now?
Yes exams are in order. -

Eh, I thought it was best 5 out of 7 tingxie in term 1?Little M:
The latest P1 听写my son got 90/100. 10 marks deducted because the HYPY \"San\" was written in capital S! I am quite mad, considering all the 听写 will be generated towards their CA1 marks. Should I complain?
Only the best 3 results will be taken. So having one 90/100 would not make a diff if he already has three full marks.
Anyway, cannot complain coz my son also got marks deducted for such \"minute\" errors. But apparently, they will still mark such mistakes wrong as they want to inculcate the practice of writing exactly what the teacher gave. They don't encourage \"creativity\" as this age. And there is no capital letter for HYPY unless it is a pronoun contained in a sentence made of HYPY. Same for English spelling too.
Take it positively that it is better that the teachers are strict during daily work so that during exams they know that cannot use Capital S. My son had his fair share in P1 & is more serious with his writing now. -
I’m a probable future Maris Stella parent as my husband is an alumni. My daughter just started at CHIJ OGLC and looking at the forum for her school and this one I feel that the Maris Stella parents are a lot more stressed about tests, academic results etc already even at the beginning of term 2!
For those of you with children in other schools as well, would you say that is true? Is the pressure coming from the teachers or would you say it is the parents that are putting on pressure? I’m very surprised to see people worrying about marks for CA for P1 students. Is this the culture in the school? -
i m not a maris stella parent but mostly likely will be wheen i register this jul.
perhaps can ask parents from other top sch eg catholic high?? that hv tests for p1?
my girl sch doesnt hv exam for p1 so p1 was a breeze.
can i ask, how are the boys in Maris stella? well behaved or not generally?
asking becos of some comments i hv heard. -
I am a parent of a P1 kid. To be frank, the questions in the tests are quite ok, not that difficult at all. The stress comes from the teachers who refuse to reveal the dates of the tests. If I can know when the tests are, we don’t have to stress our kids to study way ahead and worry when the tests will come.
I sincerely appeal to the P1 teachers to reveal the dates of the tests - Eng, Chi and Maths. When both the English and Math teachers say the tests are coming, which do we concentrate on?
The kids only have a limited amount of time spent with us so there really isn’t enough time to revise both subjects within the same day or week.
Please have mercy on us! -
For my daughter only the tests will only start to count towards their CA from this term and we will be given 1 week - 10 days notice.
What I'm interested to know though, is why is it such a big deal? I mean this is supposed to be assessment to see how well they are doing. It isn't going to decide any streaming or anything so are the teachers making a big deal out of the results or is it just a case of \"kiasuism\" on the part of the parents?
I probably won't have much choice but to send my boys to Maris Stella as my f-i-l was also a teacher there but I do want to make sure that it isn't a hothouse environment that they will be going into. -
i understand. tho my girl’s sch doesnt hv exam in p1 but daily work is counted towards year end rating (not marks, just ave, below ave and abv ave that kind) and seriously, in p2 (where there’s banding at the year end) and p3.
counting daily work is worse to me, more stressful, bcos u dont know whc piece of daily work is counted. and it also means the kids must instantly get it when the teacher just taught the topic -
On a whole so far - im happy with MS.
Yes there is schoolwork stress - but i feel its still quite manageable. Students are alittle notti - but thats part of growing up. School bus timing came up pretty well for me. Class teachers are great for me also.
No complains thus far and i'm quite glad i took the decision to register my boy at MS and try the balloting altough i stay quite far away!!
Ds 2 and 3 def going there....

Ha ha...from this thread, it would seem that the greatest problem MS has is with the packed food!i m not a maris stella parent but mostly likely will be wheen i register this jul.

A friend compared her MS son's test papers with her daughter's. She says MS work is certainly more challenging.
