Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

I usually get 3 Maths assessment book apart from Weekly revision...to start from Chap 1 for CA1, SA1 and SA2. I have Shaping Maths but have started for weekly revision. Didn't get Visible Thinking for P5..can any mummy pls advise Maths title for single assessment ? Thanks.

You mean in addition to Shaping Maths, you want 2 more assessment books that will cover from chapter 1 which for P5 should be : whole numbers, fraction 1, fraction 2, area of triangle..... right ?

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I need to get a new Maths assessment book so as to revise from Chapter 1...whole numbers, fraction 1, 2, area of triangle, ratio etc in just 1 book.

No worries, now I get it !

I go to Popular several times a week while waiting for ds to finish CCA or classes.
Always try hard not to buy but I do walk around and look through.

Shaping Maths - you already have.
If you want more books that are organised topic-by-topic:
(1) suggested by Peony : Visible Thinking by Ammiel Wan (a thorough review by Nicklebee tutor in the Ammiel Wan thread)
(2) suggested by James Ang : Casco Maths Tutor by Lee-Ann Goh.
However, both books only 5A are published, which means there is a 5B and hence don't fit your requirement to have only ONE book. Quite a lot of discussion about above 2 books, do a search on the forum.

I think you bought the Casco recently ? Is it the same one ?
Personally I find both the above books are good : Visible Thinking is easier, Casco Maths has a lot of drills.

Actually I was thinking of Simon Eio's Step-by-Step (all in 1)...but will check out Visible Thinking 5A later. The Casco I bought are actually problem sums with worked out answers. Thanks for your prompt reply. Appreciate. I had 2 cups of coffee this morning as I was planning son's SA1 revision which was just uploaded on website last night.

On sponge has only 1 book that covers all the topics for the whole year.

I also think that Onsponge is quite a good book with worked solutions provided. Study the worked examples first and then try out the exercises. If u hv any problem, u can post your question on their website and Chris Rogers or someone will respond. With a busy school schedule in P5, your boy will not be able to complete many assessment books.

I have onsponge...teacher ordered for the class.
Questions are somewhat similar to Challenging Problems (orange book cover) by Ammiel Wan.

I'm really depressed. DS scored 90+ for every subject end of last year. We've been working really hard together to cover all the topics in P5, and have just started on the SA1 practice papers. He can do Paper 1, losing 1 to 4 marks... but Paper 2 is horrible. After doing 5 practices, he has failed TWO and the other THREE are borderline.


What are other Mommies' experience please? I'm starting to think that this educational system has bested us and we're really not smart enough as a family to cope in it. :?: :?: :?: :?:

Chenonceau, I am :!: out ! No experience to share at the moment as we are struggling to keep afloat with homewok and in pace with current topics taught in school hence haven't started ANY SA1 papers.


You are referring specifically to Maths ? SA1 includes whole numbers,fractions, area of triangle and ratio, right ? Is it the ratio and fractions in paper 2 that are causing the lost of marks ? Maybe we can analyse together and also draw some experience from other moms here.
