In my opinion, I would get separate assessment book for grammar, vocab, comprehension to reinforce...all in 1 doesn't focus on areas which your daughter is weak in, for eg subject-verb or maybe comparison of adjectives. As for vocab, there are diff themes like fantasy, animals, collective nouns.

Without Eng textbook, it's hard to find a starting point. Grammar is grammar. There are rules to follow but it's so wide. Fortunately I kept up son's old textbooks from P1...got My Pals Are Here English Homework Book to teach my daughter.

Thks, Janet. Will go source for the assessment bks. 😉

I bought assessment books for individual areas like grammar, vocab, compo, compre and clozze... at the same time I also bought 3 assessments on topical tests and exams for combine learning... Lucky thing is so far my girl is doing very fast.. every day she will do 5 pages or 1 topic so I tink we can finish all the assessments this year.

I checked out Step up Grammar by Rosalind Fergusson. It's interesting and worth getting for P1/2 bcos there are pictures, and so kids find it more interesting as it's less 'wordy'.

'My Pals Are Here' has a new series...avail in Vocabulary, Comprehension & Grammar. The cover looks like this.

Although my son is in P5, I am learning to buy assessment books for my daughter (P1) all over again.

        Hi Janet & All,
Need your advice -Did your get the above for your P1 child? I was in Popular (Again??) and saw these 3 books and honestly very very tempted to get for my DD2 who is in K2 this year. I am not being Kiasu but just hope to prepare her as she belongs to the \"simply bochap\" category 😛

She is studying in PCF and although the school does give them writing but I feel that she is still in the very playful mode . Class Teacher feedbacks that she at times just refuses to write the words properly and all the words are cramped together :?

Thanks in Advance for your advice :thankyou:

          Hi Champion,

I like the My Pals Are Here series of Eng books…pictures are cute and fonts used are friendly.

My gal’s handwriting is actually neat and big, but now very cramped…like yesterday’s notes regarding ting xie…everything was lumped together and I couldn’t make out what she was writing…definitely not her pattern of doing things.

If your gal is still in K2, don’t teach her P1 stuff yet. Those K2 books by EPH would be better or she will be bored when she goes to P1. That’s my opinion.

            Hi Janet,
Thanks for your precious advice once again :D.

Yes, I do buy those EPH K2 Books for her - and she almost completing them lioa ...Although she belongs to the \"simply bo chap\" category but once she decides that she wants to do something, she will continue non-stop. The only problem is her handwriting - so big and cramps together - and that where teacher feedback. Guess school T makes her re-write and she does not want too 😞 As I am working full-time, most of the time those K2 assessment books she managed on her own but with supervision & help from my domestic helper.

              HI Champion,

Since your gal is in K2, don’t push her too hard. However, it’s good to know she is willing to learn. My gal’s handwriting is very big and ‘rounded’. Now that she has homework or notes to be copied from the board, her handwriting is cramped together.

Fortunately the P2 books I have for her is just 8 books.
Yup the P2 Complete Practice Book is by Josephine Yeo (EPH). It has CA1 and 2, SA1 and 2. Went through Loh Tee Yang's Home Study 1 and found it's not bad and that other one is the English Practice.
                Hi Janet,
I've gone thru both the books. yes both of them are good. like exam papers both have good mixture of everything.I might get them. There is a thrill to leisurely browse the assesment books at popular....joyous then to discover a desirable book

:hugs: Couldn't agree more with you...walking into Popular each time can be a thrilling experience esp if there is a fantastic new publication.

                    HI Plum-cake,

Can I check with you regarding daily schedule ?
I plan daughter’s schedule from the time she returns home, takes shower, lunch followed by homework and nap. Mon/Tue night learn Eng spelling, Wed/Thur night learn CL spelling…find it impossible to coach her for vocab, grammar for eg after that. Can you provide some tips how you do work with your gal pls ? Thanks.

You are lucky. I can only imagine what the Popular Store is like. I order books online and have them shipped here, to England. The shipping costs are 70% of total costs. :stupid: I have now got a huge bookcase full of P1-P6 books. One set for DS1 and one for DS2.

My DS2 (a rising 6, in UK Year 1, or MOE K2) is using the EPH Preparing for P1 books: Grammar, Vocab, Maths and Comprehension. I think these are great books.

                        HI optimistforum,

I see. You’re in England. Must have been tough on you, to have to order books to coach kids. The EPH Preparing for P1 books are good…bought them to prepare my gal in K2 last year.
You bought books up to P6 already ? Books are heavy…so I am not surprised they take bulk of total costs.
