      Hi Barbie88

After reading your post, I just want to share how to learn and improve Chinese. As most of the students in Singapore speak English in their family and they seldom talk w friends in Chinese, so parents and teachers should make more chances for them to practise Chinese. I do it to my DD.

      (1) Buy a few Chinese supplementary exercises books from Popular. Get my DD to do it one unit per day. (Saturday and Sunday are rest days or just for revision.) Actually, the questions are not many in one unit. I check and explain the answers to my DD.

      (2) Once my DD gets wrong answer, after explaination, I will write the vocab in a log book and make a sentence with that vocab. Since, the meaning of some vocab is quite similar, you have to use the vocab to make sentence, so that they can differinate the vocabs.

      (3) Ask them to do revision on Sat or Sun. Don’t acculmate the vocabs, otherwise, they will feel stree.

I think the above is the one of ways to learn language.

      Hope it is helpful.

          Hi to all RI parents

My son has just gotten his progressive report and did badly for his HMT Chinese. He is in Sec 1. 😢 Would appreciate anyone of you to give good advise to tackle this subject. Thank you very much!

My son did badly for his HMT too, 59 marks only. Yours?

I went to Popular to buy a Chinese assessment, he got more than 50% wrong for Cloze passage and I tried to go through the correct answers with him. I realised then that the meaning of the words were so close that even I dont know what the correct answer was. A shame that I score A in A level Chinese, albeit more than 10 years ago.

My son did worst that, he only scored 45. Finding it difficult to squeeze out time on weekdays to teach him or send him for tuition classes. On week ends he is always occupied with projects n homework. Does your child have this similar issue?

Of what weightage is this term result? Since this is the first test, they might be out to fail them so that they study hard, enage tuitin to get better result. Also can’t just see your son score only. Also must look at the class mean, medium etc.

of course not high weightage compared to the midyear and end of year

they are mindful of the GPA needed to go sec two and to join other program

don't think they are out to fail them. many of them also score high high marks like back in pri school like that

On week ends he is always occupied with projects n homework. Does your child have this similar issue?[/quote]No, on the contrary, my son is really free, no homework, occasional project work. Kept pestering me to let him play the computer at night and on weekends. Understand from other parents in this forum that RI indeed has less homework.

My son has never been the self-motivated kind, his motto is \"average will do\". If I can get him to do 10% of what meimeitan suggested, he'd not be in this state in the first place.

Since you have no time to send him for tuition, why dont you engage a tutor to come to your house?

I gave my son 2 choices: 1) read the Chinese newspaper and watch the Chinese news daily or 2) Chinese tutor.

He chose the latter simply cos the amount of time required is lesser. 😢

Ya can everyone share what the average marks their Sec1 DS got for Term1 cos looking at my DS results, I can't tell whether it is considered gd enough since it is really diff fr primary sch where most subjects' scores are above 90. Also, there is not ranking of positions so we don't know how our DS is performing in comparison to their classmates? My DS in gen score like abt 70 except for Eng scored 65. Is 65 for Eng v bad? Can someone fr those GEP classes also comment on their ave results?
