Hi everyone,


My hubby and my address on IC are the same (hougang). 1st child is due to enter pri 1 in 2012. Since birth, 1st child has been living with my parents in serangoon ie for almost 6 years now. When he starts pri 1, the school bus will pick him up and send him back to grandparents’ place. Since birth of 3rd child 6 months ago, I have been living in my parent’s place as well but my ic address is still hougang.

Assuming we register 1st child in a school near my parent’s place using our hougang address and we get in (because school is unlikely to have ballotting based on past statistics…not a HOT school). ie we get in although we live 1-2 km away whereas if we use grandparents’ address, it’s less than 1-2km.

Will there be any problems later on because 1st child actually lives at an address which is closer to school than his official address listed in school records? Address given to school bus will be different from school records.

Do I myself need to change my address to my parents’ place??? My bills are still going to Hougang address coz my husband takes care of all the bills sent there. I don’t have any bills going to my parents’ place …I understand you need to produce some bills as proof before you can change address on IC.

NRO has tightened its rules regardind address changing since June 2008. You will need to produce phone/utilities bills that reflect your current address. That is to confirm that you are staying with your mum.


Your registration priority is considered to be 1-2km even if your mum is staying right next to the school.

Only 1 NRIC is required.

Erm.. i dun understand this, if i change my add to my in laws add which is within 1 km from the sch, shldnit i be considered under <1 km if i state that i am staying there and i really stay there... keeping my current place empty. I thot we just use ic to register..as long as i can change my add there shldn't be a problem right.

Chief was actually referring to registration via the caregiver route.

If you don't change the address in your NRIC to that of your parents', it doesn't matter which address you use. You use your address, your child will be in 1-2 km category. You use your parents' address and register via the caregiver route, your child will still be under the 1-2 km category, even though your parents stay less than 1 km away from the school.

However, if you manage to change the address in your NRIC to your parents' place, you will be able to register your child under the within 1 km category. Now, the issue is, how can you change the address in your NRIC? It can be problematic if your Hougang abode in a HDB flat, because you need to be staying in your HDB flat.

So this is possible if both addresses are private/non HDB dwelings or your own address is private/non HDB and you move to stay with parent's HDB and use parent's address.

In a nutshell, yes, so long as you can get to changing the address in your NRIC.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head....in reality, child is living in grandparents house, and so am I...but under HDB rules, I need to keep my HDB address. If I go and change my address, my husband's address will be different from mine and I've some explaning to do to the school. I understand they go by the father's address?

Anyway child should be able to enrol based on the Hougang address which is further from school. Won't be using the caregiver route coz we don't meet the criteria.
