Hi, happen to see this information from RVHS for DSA application last year:

For 2010 DSA applicants, the following are the application criteria:

DSA (Academic):

All applicants must attain at least 80% for overall percentage and \"A\" grade for Chinese Language in both P5 End-Year & P6 Mid-Year Examination.
Applicants have attained special achievements in Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics or Science based competition


DSA (Special Talent): Sports & Games and Others

50% for DSA and 50% for S1 posting

for GEPpers applying, the school open house talk say average score in P4, P5 & P6 must be above 80% to avoid GAT test

any one can apply and non-GEPpers will need to sit for GAT and if successful, go for the selection tests which are out of the world type. they are out to choose EXCEPTIONAL talent, as per their website info.

even though the allocated DSA vacancies are not fill up, they will not take in the \"next best\", and will be filled up by merit and S1 posting or those DSA appeal cases with good results. as an independent school, RI has 100% discretion on how many places to put under DSA. Same for all other independent schools.

you should go RI thread as well to read what was discussed last year this time onward and get a feel of what it involves, as well as starting last May on this DSA thread.

For mainstreamers going by academic domain, 50% for RI DSA is not a lot if you do the numbers.

50% of DSA = approx 225 places

This is what RI has shared before on the allocation of DSA yearly:

- Approx 150 - 180 go to GEPpers (which is about 50% of the GEPpers boys population)

- Approx 30 - 40 go to sports (1 sports class)

- Left for mainstreamers boys approx 30 - 50 places only

let me share my experiences. i got into RI HCI and NUSH via GEP dsa, all confirmed offers. (my 2011 psle t-score is 243 and i enrolled under RI)

If u want to enroll under sports, u must be very talented, RI has quite a few classes for people under sports dsa. you must have awards, not just participation. then for english/math/science dsa, u must be extremely good at one of them. its not just band 1 for the subject, u must have prizes as well, (eg. math smops, nmos, apmops, RI heymath). English dsa is near impossible, as there arent many englsih competitions, and im not talking about spelling. u must be in debate, or have significant achievements in English, not just ICAS high distinction. GEP will help, but it does not confirm anything, even a waiting list. Then, do well for the interview, read.

by the way, that only applies for RI HCI dsa, NUSH dsa is completely different, first u have to take a science test, where u have to have read on o-level stuff, then if u pass, u have to have practical, where they test on lab skills, understanding on science, and one english composition (secondary school style).

Generally, if a student is top 5 in school from P4 to P6, he or she should not waste time and money on DSA. Just focus on preparing the PSLE and very likely they can get at least 260 T-score.

Primary schools' exam papers are all about the same standard, so which primary sch is not so important, I once found the P6 maths papers of a neighbourhood sch much more difficult than Raffles girls. I agree with LLK, for top students, just focus on psle.

My daughter scores about 90 in English ( P5 and P6 CA1). She was 1st in the level in P5 and participated in the inter-school debate but her team did not win. She won a silver in maths olympiad. Her maths results in school is around 96. Should she apply for RGS DSA or just focus on PSLE? She wants to apply through english DSA. Can anyone advise me on whether she stands a chance.
