All About (Global) Development Delays

Hi Mummy Always
Just login and was searching for discussion threads related child developmental issues.
This is because i have a girl who is 6 this year. She was also diagnosed with speech related difficulty. Similar to your son, she had difficulty expressing her thoughts and could not different between yesterday, today and tomorrow. She also had difficulty expressing herself eg. talking about her zoo outing. We had a referral with KKH CDU and also seeked private speech therapy. Situation had improved for her, but we noticed it is still lacking compare to her peers(not that i want to compare, but this is a fact that i have to admit that she is slow). She will also be sitting for the School Readiness assessment this Jun.
Had also decided to put aside my career, going into part time so that i can devote more time to her.
If possible, after kkh appt., perhaps you should engage private service to supplement KKH’s follow up.
Anyway, does any know about ACT3 international and is their program as good as it sound? Because i am contemplating to send my girl to their class.
Thanks! -
hi mama_mia
thks for sharing. i am still hoping that my son will learn sufficiently so he can manage sufficiently well when he is older. much of his communication could be rote learning, and not as effortless as many children, but i hope that high exposure will at least give him sufficient "data bank" to manage as well as a normal child. will see how… -
Hi mummyalways and LJHLJH
I don’t have any experience with this personally but just like to share the story of the son of a very close friend of mine. He started speaking very late and couldn’t speak clearly even at K1. He is also not very conscious of his surroundings eg he would eat from another’s person’s plate etc. He went for a couple of months of speech therapy before going to P1. He needed a lot of attention but somehow managed with help from the parents and older sister. They focused on his school work, eschewing other activities like music which his sister excelled in. He somehow felt inferior because his sister was doing very well academically, always coming home with medals, prizes and all sorts of award and was also a school prefect. But it helped a lot that the sister (who’s not much older) was loving, supportive and very encouraging towards him.
At the end of P6, he managed to do very well for his PSLE despite him still not being able to speak well. In fact, his score was only 5 points less than his sister. He is now in Sec 3 in a very good boys school and is a prefect, doing very well in the Maths and Sciences.
Just hope this will encourage you. They may be a little slow at the beginning, but they can still make it.
But for mummyalways, if your son is also very small for his age, it can be a case of stunted growth. You may want to have him tested for thyroid problems which is a common cause of stunted growth in children and can be dangerous if left untreated. You can look at therapy and other intervention after you’ve ruled this out. -

it's really worrying if a kid doesn't keep pace with others or with what the book state... hmmm..[/quote]When they are not speaking yet, we wish they will speak soon. Once they start talking non-stop, we wish they will keep quiet.....
When they are babies, we wish they will grow up soon. When they are grown up and started giving us white hairs with their education and discipline issues, we wish they are the cute little babies that we can just play and play with.......
Don't worry too much, each kid has his own milestones and pace. Just enjoy him for the moment! -
Both my boys only started to converse with me properly from age 4 yrs plus. Nowadays, my ear drums always feel like exploding whenever the brothers are playing excitedly with each other.

My DS started talking only after two... I heard it is quite common for boys and first borns to start later..
