my girl had been there for almost 1yr+ & now shes under the TCS group. can see a lot of improvements in her now. she's able to pick up words n sounds in a few mths after attending.

I don't think you can see result in just one lesson. You should check with your kid to see if the class is enjoyable. I think that they will learn if they enjoy it. Both of my kids in ICR AMK. They enjoyed the lesson and you can see result after some time. They will be able to read a storybook themselves.

Ds just attended 1st class with kovan branch...hubby commented that hez nt impressed with what they do in class as he seemed to be playing half e time...plus reading a story n doing a worksheet.

All of which is covered in his childcare. Hubby said itz like playgroup.

Think if he can be put in tcs,he'd b able to learn more.

Today ds brought home a worksheet he did-some tracing to follow.not sure if he did zigzag by himself but i know my son can hold his pencils very well. Duno wat else they wana see frm him...Sigh~

Im nt looking to see any results frm 1lesson.things taught r similar to childcare centre.dun c much more of literacy,like play with toys for almost 1st 20mins of a 1hr lesson.

I mean...what other new things can i c from little learners tat ds is not already doing in childcare?

If you feel that your child is kind of ‘wasting’ time there and think that he’s actually ready for the next higher level (but the teacher has concerns…), perhaps you can suggest to the teacher (probably after a few lessons) for him to try 1 or 2 lessons in the next higher level. If he can adapt well, then perhaps the teacher will allow him to stay on the higher level. If not, you have to decide for yourself if it’s worthwhile to stay on in the current level or wait for a while till he’s accessed to be ready for the next level.

Yeah,so i decided to pull him out frm little learners.am gg to assess him at another centre to confirm enrollment coz they said based on assessment tat ds did,they r willing to take him at his age.

my DD joined little learners programme when she turns 3 too, at harboufront centre branch. Initially i dont find the programme helpful as she's only doing some colouring & story telling in her class. but after a year now she made tremendous improvements. she can read some simple words on her own. no regrets la think the little learners programme is to prepare them for the next level.

my DD joined little learners programme when she turns 3 too, at harboufront centre branch. Initially i dont find the programme helpful as she's only doing some colouring & story telling in her class. but after a year now she made tremendous improvements. she can read some simple words on her own. no regrets la think the little learners programme is to prepare them for the next level.

Personally, I feel that sending a child to little learners may not be necessary…

To share my own encounter, when my DS reached 3 yo (born in Jan’07), he wasn’t able to recognized all 26 alphabet letters at all. So, I bought wooden letters jigsaw puzzle (forming an elephant shape) to play with him, took approx. 15 mins each day. Two months later, he was able to identifying each alphabet letter. So, I brought him to ICR for assessment and he had read out all single letters but wasn't able to make any vowel sound. He was then assigned to TCS program (one level after little learners), just to learn the first letter sound. At the same time, I played Leap Frog Letterfactory DVD and accessed to starfall website and preschooler phonics series (bought from popular) at home. Revised single letter vowel with him almost daily, he picked up the first sound and moved from TCS to PRP in less than 2 months.

DS is now 4 yo 3 months, already in PRP for almost a year. He is able to read P&J book 9 a/b (started with book 3a/b last Sep’10) At the same time, he is able to decode first, middle and last sound as well as blend words in other story books (example Mr Men series, Thomas & friends, USborne books & other preschooler books). Teacher in-charge informed that she will be testing him and he should be ready to move to ICR very soon but he need to practice in writing. Hope all will turn out well.

By giving DS a good interactive phonics enrichment along with home exposure, result is desirable. If we solely depend on a program alone (conduct only once weekly), result could be at slower pace. Just my humble view.

Thanks for the reply, Chen Tai. Do you think your DD would have picked up those simple words on her own without joining the programme? Did you try to reinforce what she learned at Little Learners by going through their materials at home regularly? I can't wait for my girl to start reading on her own; she keeps pestering me to read to her a few times a day! Sometimes very tiring.... :shock:

Thanks for the detailed sharing. I was surprised to know an assessment was conducted when your DS was only 3yrs 2mth. Cos when I called up the ICR branch at Rivervale Mall to enquire about the Little Learners programme, the person I/C told me kids going to Little Learners do not need to be assessed. Do you think I should insist on an assessment since my DD already knows the sounds of most of the letters?? What is the difference in the Little Learners programme and TCS? What does TCS stand for btw?? :?

yes, she might have picked up the reading skills fm her childcare too u are right. i did question the teacher (Ms Karen) before but she told me that kids that go through the little learners will pick up easier at the upper levels compared to those who didnt. so i asked my DD if she still want to continue & she told me she like the class, so i just let her continue. I think if she enjoys, she wl pick up more i did not reinforce what she learn during little learners cos there's no workbooks n all. mainly took back all the colourings sheets. I only started reinforcing when she's start 4 years old. PS: they have homework to do every week!

btw, TCS means THINKING & learning skills....its a level UP from little learners. TCS only learn the 1st sound of every alphabets.

FYI, my DD is already in PRP just before she turns 4 (wch quite a few of her classmates are already 5-6 years old). i guess its bcos she started ICR young thus picking up faster than those who just joined.
