      Hi everyone!


      Finding a kindergarten for my child who wd be attending Nursery (N2) in 2010. Have read with interest on all the postings here regarding Montessori. 🙂

      Have anyone of u heard of the Shekinah Montessori Enrichment Centre @ Punggol Plaza? Can share your comments? Thanks.

          Horrible Thats the only word I can say.

          Even my son also had similar experience in school.
          One of his friend used to hit him often some times bite some time hit once he pushed him hard and sprained his leg. When I complained to principal she said they are good friends I'll ask teacher with a big smile. I got so annoyed atleast u can show some concern!!!!

            My child is in Montessori full day childcare (N2). Communication between teaching and parent is via:


            - comms book: updated irregularly, on average twice a month, quite brief handwritten notes by her class teacher
            -2 PTM a year: 15 min sessions each time

            I am wondering whether this is normal.

            My child is happy in school (or at least not unhappy) but it is unsettling as I have little clue as to what she is doing in school, and how she is progressing.

              I think u will kind of know wat ur child learn when she starts talking or singing, u may find tat suddenly she knows this and knows that. But maybe N2 a bit young to tell out. Actually i used to think tat my daughter’s school dunno what they are teaching her, but den at the meet the parents session, the teachers do give a detailed explanation, and let u bring back all the books and art and craft that she has done thru out the yr. Den i realised, wow she did quite a lot of work.

              But if u think tat the teachers din do a gd job of explaining what they hv been doing, den judge by ur instincts, if u think something is lacking, by all means go look for a better school. I believe any parent has the right to know what her child is learning in school.
              Btw i hv changed school for my daughter twice already.

                Thanks for your input. Just curious why you change your daughter’s school twice … I don’t think I would do that unless I really have to.

                  Hey My 5 y/o boy has been attending a Montessori sch for a year over there. Not sure if he should continue with the Montessori or switch to the mainstream KG as to prepare him for P1 in 2011.

                  You hafta gauge his ability eversince he started his Montessori
                  education in Dubai till today. Is he able to do stuff that children
                  in normal kindergarten are doing - in his case K1... Is he already
                  midway through the blends (blue scheme) in his Montessori Phonics
                  and steadily reading books be it Phonetic concept books and graded
                  readers? Can he work the place value, simple additions and subtraction
                  including recording? He should also at this stage have good pencil grip &
                  be writing efficiently ie. penmanship. Ability to spell is bonus but not a
                  critical factor as yet... If he's managing all the above well, it would mean
                  the early Montessori training has gone well on track and should be okay to
                  resume in a Montessori environment. There are other soft skills you still
                  need to look into as well, like his interaction with peers (confidence) and
                  working independently and with others..... as many here know, Montessori
                  caters for a lower teacher:child ratio to enable the individual curriculum
                  styled learning to be more effective.

                    Not exactly normal by MY standards, hahahahaa! But this is something
                    we cannot compare as this is the practice within individual centres and
                    also the teacher's initiatives. A childcare environment is a very busy plc.
                    Tending to children's care and education at the same time and in some
                    centres, in high numbers of children in each class to like only 2 teachers.

                    PTM twice a year should be fine. Are there any newsletters from the
                    centre to update parents on the goings-on of the centre activities?
                    Do the children bring back their work from the centre on a weekly
                    or fortnightly basis? Upon registering in ANY centre, parents should
                    find out what will be covered until the end of the year for the child's
                    class level. For example, how will language be taught? At the end of
                    the year, will my child learn all the alphabets/letter names or does
                    the school also do Phonics... For Maths, will children be exposed to
                    0-10 or 0-20 for N1 (for example) and how will these concepts be
                    taught? Any written assignments from the centre or will they
                    practise what learn thru' play using mostly crafts for younger
                    children. How will parents be informed of what the centre is
                    doing with the children so that we can provide home revision
                    in line with the school's activities/lessons? How about excursions?
                    Twice a year or once for every school term - ie. 4 terms=4 excursions.

                    I encourage you to give the school a visit and get yourself updated on
                    the stuff that your child is doing and will be doing for the rest of the year.
                    You SHOULD know what your child is learning... and your desire for more
                    involvement in your child's development is a thumbs up in my eyes. 😉

                      I do appreciate the workload and that's why I would like to know what is \"normal\", or \"industrial standard\". Given that there is no \"industrial standard\", your list of questions are very useful in highlighting what we should/could be looking at. Thanks again.

                      With your long list of questions, unfortunately, most of the answers are NO. We did not even realise our child has been learning phonics until one day, teacher wrote in comms book that our daughter is not progressing well and asked us to reinforce at home. Then we found out that she has been on the first set of phonics for 4 months. All kids learn at different pace and our daughter is a very average kid. However, I somehow feel that it is excessive and we could have been alerted earlier.

                      Paying the school a visit is a good idea, and I hope it helps. Thanks again.
