My hubby used to work in Power Senoko as an electrical engineer. According to him, the power station are supposed to always buy at least 3 months more of fuel for power generation. However, due to govt privatisation of power station, they sell the electricity generated to PUB then PUB charge us. So he also doesn’t understand why everytime when announced oil price go up, electricity price goes up almost immediately too.

To him, he felt that, power generation should be in govt hand to ensure that electricity pricing is affordable and doesn’t keep going up. He left Senoko power station before it is bought over by oversea company. He thinks that after Temasek sell away all power stations, it is a bad bad move.

        baong:
I was browsing some election news and read that TH sold Spore's energy providers to foreigners...

Mar 2008 – Tuas Power was sold to China Huaneng Group for $4.235 bil

Sep 2008 – Senoko Power was sold to Lion Power Holdings (comprsing Japanese Consortium) for $4 bil

Dec 2008 – PowerSeraya was sold to Sabre Energy (subsidiary of YTL Power International Berhad) for $3.8 bil

Is that true?! Pardon my ignorance ... but i dun remember reading this 2 years back.

No wonder prices keep going up up n up...
You hit the nail on the head! DH used to work in the energy industry, this is what he has been saying for years...to borrow his words \"SINGAPOREANS ARE BEING SCREWED BY FOREIGNERS\" These foreign companies are \"co-operating\" to charge high prices. According to him, if anyone cares to chart the relationship between oil prices and electricity tariffs, one would realise that the increase in our tariffs is much more than the increase in oil prices!!! Maybe someone should question the EMA chief, Lawrence Wong, who is joining politics, what has he been doing when he was EMA Chief???? Hope he is not one of those identified by our PM to be of ministerial quality.

Agreed. I just can't understand why TH can sell this kind of key strategic asset of Singapore to foreigners?!

So now in Spore, the price of energy is at the mercy of these foreign companies... Sad
          😢

Come to think about it, maybe TH is earning even more by selling away. When they sell, they earn a huge sum already. Then when these power station sells electricity to EMA which in turns charges to us, we are just paying whatever is the increase. They are still earning the difference.
Not to forget, when power stations can't start a generator by the designated time, they are being fined. So they are still earning no matter what. But it is we, the citizens, that are poor thing now. Because EMA need to profit, we have to pay more.
            Really Rubbish! :stupid:

from what I see, since they sold the operations, EMA can now fine them if they fall below the required service level. If TH owns them, then it's like left pocket into right pocket...where got meaning?

Think about it, if these energy companies are made to pay penalties, all these add’l costs will inadvertently find their ways to us, in the form of higher tariffs.

the same goes to those taxi coys, bus coys and smrt fined for delays etc...all the money comes from the consumers and end up with the authorities, ya?!

What are the energy consumption habits of Singaporeans?

Some figures on energy tariffs worldwide -->
                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_pricing

At the end of the day, energy is energy, it costs that much to generate, store and distribute. If your energy bill is $100, 6.5% is $6.50, a lunch and drink at the hawker's, and you will manage, if your energy bill is $500, and you are paying $32.50 more, maybe you should modify your behaviours, use your aircon less and get your kids to switch off the TV and lights when they leave the room. If you run a business and your energy bill is $50,000, then maybe you need to think about your business practices and run more efficiently.

Fossil fuels are finite, Nuclear is....well....., Renewables are not there yet, the only sustainable solution is reduced and more efficient usage. Whether its 20 cents or 40 cents/kWh TODAY is actually an irrelevant question, because it will be inevitably be higher TOMORROW.
