              Hi

need help in the following questions.
a)The number of 20cents coins to $1 coins in Jane’s box is 5:4. She took out 8 $1 coins and exchanged them into 20 cents coins of the same value. The ratio of the number of 20cents coins to $1 coins became 15: 4. What was the amount of money Jane has?
I used equivalent ratio and got $35. I wondered is the answer correct.
Is it possible to use model or units method? If yes, how?

b)There are 140 apples and 200 oranges in Stall X.
There are 160 apples and 40 oranges in Stall Y.
How many apples and oranges must be moved from Stall Y to Stall X so that 50% of the fruits in Stall X and 75% of the fruits in Stall Y are apples?

              Thanks for guide.

                Hi,

I have 2 questions to ask.

Apologise in advance if they have been asked before. Because I don't know how to search if they have been asked before. Maybe we should have some \"header\" for each post or something... to identify the question. in certain \"naming convention\" which will facilitate searches.

Anyway, my questions are as follows :

                1. 2010 P6 Rosyth School SA1 Paper 2 Qn 14

George had some trading cards. He gave 75% of them to Mary and 20% of the remainder to Charlie. He than had 140 trading cards left.
                (a) how many trading cards had George at first ?
                (b) how many percent more trading cards did Mary receive than Charlie ?

                2. 2010 P6 Nan Hua Primary School SA1 Paper 2 Qn 18

                http://i56.tinypic.com/28i92es.jpg\">

                Many thanks.

                    Hi Emelyn

                    A quick one for Q2.

Total percentage in a pie chart --------- 100%

The diameter divides the circle into equal half.

                    50% - 45% ------- 5%
                    5% --------- 15
                    100% --------15 x 20 -------- 300 (total number of canned soft drinks sold)

                    Soya bean --------3/10 ------- 30%
                    Ice lemon tea ---------- 20%

                    % of 7 up canned drinks over ice lemon tea canned drinks --------- (45-20)/20 x 100% ------- 125%

                    Best wishes

The solution from my son's teacher.... for part (b)

                      100% -> 700 trading cards
Mary has 75% while Charlie will have 5%
                      Difference will be 70%.

:!: Ok... maybe she read the question wrongly.

Many Thanks.... Tianzhu. You are the saviour.

                        Solution from my son's teacher.....

                        7-Up = 135
                        Ice-lemon Tea = 60
                        Difference is 75
                        % more => 25%

Err..... I am starting to worry.... why is she solving both problems using the differences ?
