This is due to a lot of serious problems with the way maids are employed in Singapore. Maids do not need to pay a single cent when they come to Singapore, their maid loan is paid in full by the employer. If the maid does not like the employer, she can always ask to transfer to a new employer. The new employer will then have to pay the remaining part of her loan. Imagine if you are the maid, will you be motivated to work hard ? You will try to change employers until you find one where you can take afternoon naps and talk on the phone all day, right ? That was exactly what one of my ex-maids told me, she left me after 2 months.

Also, maids are allowed to change employers as often as they like, and as many times as they like. MOM will not question them. However, if employers change maids 5 times a year, we will be asked to go for an interview.

Unless the government fix these issues, we are always going to have a lot of problems with maids, unless we are very lucky.

Just coz some employers don't give maids off-days do not make us lousy employers. i think it is very much on a individual needs basis between employer/employee and not broad based stereotyping.

                super LIKE this! 😉

                Yes!! me too!

All my previous maids and current maid are super lucky, only handle one kid and simple cooking and house chores. She can rest as and when as she like when my son goes to school, even wkends if we are out, she has 1-2 days all by herself! She even has her own hp to make use of.

just read in the papers that 16 agencies will be fined for ganging up to increase indo maids’ salaries. Call me evil, but I was like so happy!

The trouble is, although the maids’ salaries are not $450, they are only at most $20 cheaper, cos most of the agencies I went to still quoted me salaries of $400 to $420. Which is still a big jump from the $350 from before the stupid agencies decided to raise the salaries.

My colleague recently confirm a maid ex-saudi at $430. To me, I defined experienced maid as in having work in Singapore. Other than Taiwan and Hong Kong, working in other countries is not considered experience to me. Those who work in Malaysia and elsewhere can’t even do proper housekeeping let alone take care of kids. If they are already working in HK or Taiwan, they wouldn’t want to be transfered back here unless something serious happen to the maid there.

At least HK and Taiwan has more chinese people and hence culture similar to us. I guess there should be a guideline as to what is consider as working experience for maids. From there, then they adjust the salary.

So far our ex-Msia maids have been very good.

Why? They told us that their employers in Msia really work them to the bones, very strict (no phone calls allowed, no off day, usually don't even leave the house at all).

So when my maids came here, small HDB flats, few people in the house, no need to wash so many cars, they are very happy!

& since I only chose those who worked for Indian/Caucasian/Chinese family, they can speak some English/Chinese so their languages skills are quite good.
