Wow, am pretty shocked to hear about the Uni standards. But you are right, presently, our mainstream school system is not set up to support the expectations at the PSLE level. So in that sense, there is not a level playing field, as those families that are able will certainly gain a large advantage.3Boys:
That was an incredibly insightful and analytical post, really got me thinking. I suppose one question is whether we have already reached the limit of what we can achieve on an individual and group basis. Your HR analogy is a good one, but may be flawed on the account that it assumes that the rest of the world remains static. In fact, the economic example, especially what we can observe in the world today, suggests that there is in fact a rachet. I.e., a Bachelor's may have been good enough 10 years ago, but now you need a Masters degree, in 20 years, perhaps you need a PhD. The academic bell curve has shifted rightwards in the last 20 years. Perhaps we are still pushing the upper limits with better nutrition, nurture and education, and it may well be that we do not yet know where the true bell curve lies.
We have lived in USA and France... and still have ties to these countries. I reckon that if our kids can handle PSLE with a 280, they're ready for some of the less well-known universities in such countries.
It is astute of you to note that the bell curve keeps us up to date with the competition. I reckon that few people would have noted the impact of not at all following the curve. :salute: It's delightful to have someone understand the post in its entirety and even see beyond it.

It's like the car's accelerator. You can press the pedal down to the bottom all the time... or you can scan the competitive horizons and modulate the degree to which to adjust the standards. It needs to be a nuanced approach where the bell curve is used with skill and sensitivity... Right now, the pedal is way down to the floor and the train is running away.
Also, I buy into your social agenda too. Its been said that our society is fracturing rapidly along a rich-poor divide, and this problem is certainly contributory. -

Agree agree...our teachers here have to teach Math, Science, English and Social Studies...simply rojak. The state we are in is caused by MOE.
In contrast, our schools rushes through the syllabus, and have exam questions that tests concepts that are not even introduced in the class. She feels that students in China have a much better foundation than Singapore students.janet_lee88:
But in a classroom of 40, how can he/she possibly pay attention to all of them ? It is possible to have a maximum of 30 pupils at P1 and P2, why can't this continue all the way to P6 ? Why is the class increased to 40 from P3 onwards ? Science is introduced at Primary 3 and it's not an easy subject to handle.
Our teachers are jack of all trades. They're not specialists and they try to cope as much as they can, teaching 3 subjects (Science, Maths, English) in half a day, with PE and other non academic subjects thrown in, competing for time with the academic subjects. It is no wonder we're where we are now.
We pride ourselves in our education, I think the credit should go to the parents and the tuition agencies.
Well, with the elections over, and the top man has said that they will listen more to the people and take suggestions from them. We'll see if they walk the talk.
As parents, we are pretty much involved in our kids, education included.
Since the TOP man mentioned he has heard us, let's see whether something POSITIVE will be done to improve the system asap and not 5 years later. -
