How come 90% of ds's homework is chinese? I see very little english homework and maths homework is almost zilch. The only chance he has to improve his english is in reading storybooks during silent reading.

Btw I'm not complaining, merely trying to seek confirmation from 过来人.
I think it is quite subjective, depending on the respective teacher for the subject. Some teachers prefer the class to attempt to works during lessons, some prefer them to bring back for homework. I do not recall mine having much school homeworks during P2 (cannot comment on P1 since she was not in PH then), regardless of any subject. 😉

Then, I was \"onz\"er to coach her on her daily revision. She did assessment, topical in advance of her lessons. I followed Maths/CL texts syllabus. CL, I added oral, compre, vocabs and compo. As for EL, I used selected assessment books, and covered mainly 4 mains areas, Vocabs, Compre, Grammars and Compo(CW). Your son is with TLL and/or other classes, right? I think he is in good hands. 😉

As for school teaching, if the teacher is 'onz', more teachings, I believe most PH teachers will cover sufficient for the level needs, for others, they adopt the infamous 'Teach less, learn more' philosophy.

Reading is a great way to learn too. Did your ds's EL tr start a class library for them?

My boy's class were told by the EL teacher that some pupils who chose to write the non-pic compo had failed the compo.

I remembered my elder boy had lots of class assignments (almost once a week frequency) to train for such compo type. I feel that it is not right to include this type of compo in SA1 for P4. Those pupils who chose to write this compo type made a very bad choice. Poor thing.

Poor kids. I do not recall my girl's EL tr gave them any situational writing assignment ever before. :scratchhead:

Looks like PH is introducing P5 EL Compo to P4.
The enrichment centre which son attends always get the kids to write non-pic compo but I remind him NEVER attempt during exam as it's very easy to go out of point...given the tense situation..or write something TOO imaginative. Hopefully :xedfingers: with a picture, he still has something to fall back on.

Non-pic compo if well written will get a higher score than pic compo. But it needs to be very logical in its flow, taking into acct all points given in the qn. As long as the child builds the storyline alongside the points listed in the qn, it shld not get out of point. But once stray away from the given skeleton, it is a :nailbite: situation.

To expect such maturity from a P4er is very unreasonable and unrealistic given it is only semester 1 and there is a lack of practice n guidance. I hope the group of pupils who attempted this non-pic compo and failed do get a 2nd assessment and hopefully the teacher can give at least a just pass for them.

P4 EL picture vs non-picture compo.

Was surprise when ds2 shared that whole class did once only, and probably few weeks ago before SA1. T informed that the marks will not be reviewed to students and would be ‘used’ as a backup marks for students not able to turn up for actual Paper 1 during exams. This is to help those who fall sick and for certain reasons not taking the paper 1. This sounds good I thought…
Though it’s first time hearing this, so kinda surprise. When crossed check with ds1 whom also aware there is such ‘arrangements’ in PH. Surprise of such ‘secret arrangements’ as probably me was LF in the past years and haven’t heard of such things before.

But the more important point or surprise is that non-picture compositions was done just once, and that’s it ! Then paper 1 component comprises of 2 choices for students to choose from ie picture which students are exposed to already (not too many though) and vs. non-picture which students have done just once.

Btw T informed class that one student failed as out-of-point for attempting non-pic compo. As for those who did picture compo, T also informed class to expect some scoldings next week when distributed back to class.

Haizx…don’t know which category mine falls under…

I did not hear abt the arrangement from my boy with regards to the backup compo. Surprised he forgot to tell me.

He also did not mention abt the \"expect some scoldings\" next week. :xedfingers:

I stand corrected. My girl's tr gave them 2 situational writing assignments before. Both marked and returned. Mine did not do well for both. 13 or 14/20. She said she did 2 EL journals.

This year is the intro year to non-pic compo and I dun recall many class practices for such compo before SA1.

Don't think it's anything wrong to attempt Non-Pic Compo ....

Even if the Kids Got it OFF Topic ....
Think it's a Good Attempt Now, and Know where they Go Wrong Now, then can improve on it, Not to Commit Such Mistake again ....

My Gal Much Prefers Non-Pic, Says these R More Challenging
Can Exercise Your Imaginations, Not Limited to write within the confines of the Pic ....

By the Way, She Got Write OFF Topic before in Exam ....
But with that Hard Lesson Learnt,
(She Was Very Disappointed with the Poor Results then ....)
                        And ....
She Yold Me She Will NEVER-NEVER Commit the Same Mistake Again ....
